If you are interested in a 5D. I highly recommend a book called DSLR Cinema. Where people like George Lucas and others that work on Terminator movies and Tv shows like House talk about the brilliantness of the camera. One gent even talks about how he was asked to come to Skywalker ranch and show Lucas and his brood the many wonders of the 5D, and then they project it all onto the 40FT screen they have there.

Made me very happy I made my purchase. And my projects that I have done so far look amazing. I notice none of the drawbacks our insightful writer speaks of in my projects. But most of my work is indoors. So maybe that might be one thing...who knows.

What if you do want to do a theatrical release with a 5d film? Is it impossible? Or is the 7D a better option for that?

Thoughts?

There's some interesting discussion of 5dMkII vs. GH1 here. I'd love to have the 24p of the GH1, but not at the expense of low-light sensitivity, inferior codec, ISO banding, and no hacked firmware. As it is, putting together a DSLR shoot package feels fairly future-proof, as pro DSLRs hold their value well, and one could swap out the cam itself and keep everything else the same (when a superior model is released). This, of course, is basically the RED "brain" model.

Nice post. I'm a professional stills shooter who, after getting the 5Dm2, has gone into cinematography professionally, after several years of only dabbling in it as a hobby.

I've been amazed at what I've been able to do with my 5D and Zeiss Primes. The camera – especially for the money – amazes me every day in its abilities. In fact, I just completed the teaser trailer for a feature film I'm shooting on the 5Dm2: http://machinacinema.com

The Red is overkill for a lot of people out there, and considering the price difference, the 5Dm2 is a godsend for the small time indie filmmaker.
