Canon7dvsmysterycam-223x125We've seen DSLR vs 35mm film comparisons, wherein DSLRs like the Canon 5D, 7D, T2i, and Panasonic GH1 prove to be untouchable from a price-performance perspective. But we all know that some day, a better camera will come out in the same price range. Everyone's wondering which manufacturer will be the one to premiere such a camera -- Sony, Panasonic, Canon, RED? As it turns out, the upstart manufacturer is none of the above. And the camera that bests the Canon 7D from a price-performance perspective? It's available today. Here's a shootout video featuring this new camera, filmed by Brandon Bloch:

Heh heh heh. What do you think? Does the $1,700 Canon 7D look 34 times better than the $50 Barbie Video Doll ? Because that's how much more it costs, and from a bang-for-the-buck perspective, the Barbie trounces the DSLR. An even more important question: is the 7D's "Rugged Body Casing" better than the Barbie's "Stylin' Zebra Hoodie?"

Watching the comparison, I found myself thinking: you could honestly make a good feature film with either one of these cameras. ((You'd have to hack the firmware of the Barbie to allow for manual exposure, though.)) Thanks to DSLRs, the camera is certainly not the bottleneck for making quality films anymore.
