Adobe-preludeWith Story and OnLocation, Adobe has been adding to their better-known video applications (Premiere Pro, After Effects) and transforming their suite into an end-to-end production solution. The latest addition is an application called Prelude, and in San Francisco they recently demoed the new software, which looks to be an on-set ingest and logging program.

Via Philip Hodgetts, here are some of the new features as relayed by Adobe's Al Mooney:

  • Works directly off non-tape media
  • Media can be previewed and selects trimmed before ingest to Prelude
  • Icons can be “skimmed” (I think Adobe has a different term) FCP X style.
  • Will copy media from the card to a specified location
  • Will (optionally) do proxy (or really any specified format) generation in parallel with ingest
  • Has great tools for subclipping and adding log notes easily
  • Can build simple cuts-only timelines
  • Exports direct to Premiere Pro or to Final Cut Pro 7 XML.

Plenty of questions remain -- does this interact with, or replace, Bridge? -- but you can bet we'll be seeing much more about Prelude (and the CS6 suite in general) at this year's NAB. This looks to be a much-needed application in the days of tapeless, DIT/Data Wrangler-based on-set workflows.

And in other news, the well-known Final Cut Pro User Group (at which Prelude was presented) has changed its name to the Creative Pro User Group. Sure, this is partially due to the Final Cut Pro X debacle, but it's also a reflection of the fact that the group formerly known as FCPUG has had an increasing number of presentations by Adobe and Avid, even before FCPX.
