Vimeo-ios-logoVimeo has always been a huge supporter of artists, musicians, filmmakers - anyone in the arts. They've fostered a community that lets artists be who they want to be, and post their work without restrictions, something that's a bit harder to find on YouTube. Today they updated their iOS app, and like most of their website, it's still free. The big news, however, is that it finally works natively on those millions of iPads you creatives have been carrying around.

Take a look at their brief introduction video:

Yes it's almost comically short, but I thought it was well done, and it makes little sense talking about Vimeo and not showing a video. The big news, obviously, is that the app now finally works natively on the iPad. This is the entire list of updates from their website:

  • Free to download from the iTunes App Store
  • Compatible with iPad, iPhone 3GS and above, iPod Touch, and iOS4.3 and above
  • Watch and manage your Vimeo videos and download them to your camera roll
  • Browse suggested videos while you watch
  • Watch videos from your Feed, Watch Later queue, or previously liked videos
  • "Like" videos, comment on videos, and add videos to your Watch Later queue
  • Discover new and interesting videos curated by Vimeo Staff
  • Easily upload your raw footage or edited videos in HD or SD
  • Use the editor to edit your footage and add music from the Vimeo Music Store
  • Pause/resume uploads and receive reminders when an upload is paused
  • Replace existing videos
  • Edit titles, descriptions, tags, privacy settings, and credits
  • Share via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, email, and/or SMS
  • Add videos to Groups, Channels, and Albums
  • Access stats on plays, likes, and comments

If you happen to be one of the many filmmakers who have an iPhone or iPad, this app makes Vimeo a much more customized experience than browsing on Safari. The other big news, is that they've now included an editor with the app. This is impressive for a free application, and I know that plenty of people will take full advantage of it. One use that comes to mind, for example, is if you didn't have a computer or were in the middle of nowhere, you could record a vlog update for your movie with your iPhone or iPad - then edit it, add music, and upload it all from one mobile app. It's available right now on iTunes for free.

For any Android or Windows Phone users out there, you'll probably have to wait a little longer for those new features on your device. Vimeo just released a new app last month for both devices, so I wouldn't expect the new features to be ported over immediately. Not being able to edit videos will certainly not ruin the experience for the majority of users, but it sure is handy if you don't have anything else.

Vimeo also announced that they have developed an app for the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. If you're an adventurous person and you've got Windows 8 Consumer Preview, you can get it now. Here are the features:

  • Beautiful, fast, and fluid Metro style design
  • Browse our awesomely curated Channels
  • Via Play To, beam Vimeo videos to supported devices like TVs and other Windows computers
  • Share videos you like to other apps supporting the Windows 8 sharing charm
  • Search for any video on Vimeo

With Microsoft utilizing a tablet-style GUI for Metro, I would expect everyone to make an app for the new operating system. For those who haven't seen it, check out the link above, because I think Microsoft might have a winner on their hands. For the first time in their history, I can honestly say I like the style and functionality that they are bringing with Metro. Yes, old Windows is still underneath the hood, but for the most part, the average person won't have to leave Metro too often.

Is anyone already using the Vimeo iOS or Android/Windows app, and if so, what do you think? Does anyone else like Metro?
