You don't have to purchase it like that, you can just get the rig itself without those additions. It's really for people moving up who want a full cinema kit but have never had a mattebox or follow focus since they've just been using DSLRs. With DSLRs, a lot of times there just isn't money or space for a follow focus and mattebox.

The FS100 could also definitely be someone's first camera, because plenty of people bought HVXs and EX1s and had never owned anything more than a handycam.

Why would that the FS100 rig include a FF and a mattebox? Maybe just when it first comes out? I would assume that most people buying this camera isn't buying it as their first camera and probably already have a FF and mattebox already.

Haven't had the chance to use it in a professional setting yet. In terms of image quality, it's nice, but you've got to do some decent grading to get out that Sony plastic look - which I've come to accept since I've shot a lot of stuff with the EX1. People complain about the clipped highlights, which I've certainly seen, but shooting very flat and watching exposure can help with that. I mean for the price point, nothing else compares, it has the low-light quality of its $13,000 sibling and basically the same as the C300, and can take any camera mount imaginable. I would absolutely shoot a feature on it in terms of image quality alone - but I can't really comment on the usability aspect, except to say that Sony shoved way too many buttons into a small area. Other than that it's like any other small camera, handheld is possible, but some sort of shoulder rig can help tremendously. I actually don't use a shoulder rig for a lot of what I do - and for none of these NAB videos - but I may expand on that in a future post.
