Chris,

I looked around the site but couldn’t find a comprehensive list of screenwriting competitions that are considered – well I won’t use the word legit – but let’s say competitions that aspiring writers like myself should focus on.
Past posts at nofilmschool speak highly of Scriptapalooza, Script P.I.M.P and of course the Nicholl Fellowships.
Any others that should be added to the list?

Writers from other countries have won the fellowship. This year, a writer from South Africa won.

Good screenplays win :) Seriously, though, check out the Nicholl Fellowships Facebook page (link at bottom of the post). They have posted a lot of data about the genres of entrants overall and by particular round. Ultimately, don’t worry about genre or budget. Write the type of story that you write best. The Nicholl Fellowships competition looks for good storytelling in screenplay form above all else.

The Nicholl Fellowships competition doesn’t offer feedback on screenplays – I mention this briefly at the end of the article, but it gets buried a bit in the post, I realize. I just know that 4 Academy members read it once it made it to the semifinal round. I imagine if any of them really loved it and wanted to help it get made, they could’ve reached out to me once the contact information was revealed. And I’ll tell you I never got that email, which is a good indicator why it didn’t make it to the finals.

Chris, I’m interested to know as I don’t see it in this article or your previous one (about writing your best screenplay) – Since you made it to the semifinals of the Nicholls I’m assuming your script was reviewed by 4 Academy members like the rest of them. What kind of feedback did you get from this process?

Hi,

This is from the FAQ.

Q: Are citizens of countries other than the United States eligible?

A: Yes. Any writer who writes in English and who meets the other eligibility requirements can enter a script into the Nicholl competition.

What type of screenplays would you say win: hollywood blockbusters? comedy? indie? or does it really not matter?
