For the third time, MUBI has partnered up with the Images Festival to bring you a selection of the festival's short films. Images Festival, established in 1987, is the largest festival in North America for experimental and independent moving image culture. Images has presented thousands of vanguard media-based projects in the last 24 years of its existence, and this year, they bring 20 of this year's films to you -- for free -- through MUBI.
The Images Festival is Toronto's second oldest film festival and was established by the Northern Visions Collective and began as Toronto's only alternative to the Toronto International Film Festival. They specialize in independent media arts not only in Canada, but worldwide. They encourage and exhibit the projects of artists that tend to go against the grain, from those who produce non-mainstream commercial work to those who prefer contemporary avant-garde cinema. The Images Festival describes their purpose as such:
To ensure the visibility of film, video and the digital arts, new media and related installation works from all regions and communities; to promote the professional advancement of and cultural exchange between independent Canadian media artists; and to create a progressive, inclusive, and engaging forum for critical dialogue -- The festival's mandate is to present and promote excellence in independent film, video and other time-based media; to expand the definitions of media art and art in general; and to expand the audience for this work.

So, if you've exhausted your collection of Maya Deren and early David Lynch films and are looking to enjoy some new avant-garde cinema, jump over to MUBI's Images Festival program and take a peek. You'd better hurry, though. The festival only lasts until April 20th.
