For fans of the Alien franchise, five years is a long time to wait for the next iteration of the series to hit theaters, but at long last, opening night is inching ever closer with just nine sleeps left to go. How are you preparing for the big day? Are you binge-watching all four films in the main series (Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection), as well as the prequel, Prometheus? Are you perusing the work of the artist responsible for the macabre look of the xenomorph, H.R. Giger? Well, in these videos from Tested, Adam Savage, former co-host of MythBusters, is giving you the chance to go behind the scenes of Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant as he checks out many of the film's impressive special effects.

In this video, Savage sits down with costume designers Janty Yates and Michael Mooney to discuss how the pair approached the look and feel of the spacesuits in the film.

Finally, Savage heads to Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia to get a peek at the massive sets built for the film. As he observes the many artists working on weathering to each set, he makes a very interesting comment about the importance of adding detail and color to sets and props.

The trick is to add color or to add texture that doesn't necessarily pop to your eye, but helps bring the details out. It helps to add layering and weathering and, really, a story. If you just paint it one color it just looks like a single object. But when you add that weathering, you're adding more of a narrative to that object.

Alien: Covenant hits theaters May 19th.
