Adobe has announced the purchase of the Skybox toolset from Mettle, which will help evolve the 360° and VR tools available in Premiere Pro and After Effects. Mettle co-founder Chris Bobotis will go along with the sale, becoming Adobe's Director of Professional Video.

While Premiere and After Effects already have extensive support for 360° and VR content creation, the Skybox suite extends those tools heavily, with a focus on placing text and graphics in a 3D space that is especially popular in documentary and advertising production. The toolset is already popular with outlets such as Discovery, CNN, HBO, The Washington Post and The New York Times, and will be an integrated native part of upcoming releases for both Premiere and AE.

In the same wave of news, Adobe has also announced record earnings in the second quarter of 2017, with $1.77 billion in revenue, with creative revenue making up $1.01 billion of that. That's a lot of creative cloud subscriptions. Adobe has done a tremendous job of positioning itself as the default creative software platform across the education, entertainment, and government spaces, which is translating into healthy profits that will hopefully see Adobe continue to acquire exciting technology and keep innovating on its existing products.
