External Harddrive for 4k Editing

I'm looking into upgrading my equipment for 4K editing and want to be able to work from an external drive than use my storage on my computer. At this present time I'm in the process of getting my hands on a customised retina imac for this purpose as well, however I'm not too sure what external drive has a good enough transfer rate for real time editing, I've been looking at the Drobo 5D and the G Drive Thunderbolt externals. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you're NOT working with 4K RAW footage then real-time playback will largely depend on the graphics card of your Mac more than the hard-drive.

FYI, one of the editors I work with uses a Thunderbolt dock with Western Digital RED 4TB hard drives, which is more than fast enough for non-RAW 4K footage.

I beg to differ, what's more important is the bitrate of your 4k footage. Check the bitrate of your drives and see what the bottleneck will be. Best choice will be PCIe SSD but in your case probably thunderbolt RAID. My A7s footage was 300MB/s and that's more than 4k RAW for lots of cameras. It matters the bitrate not the resolution.

If you're looking to buy an external hard drive I'd recommend taking a look at this youtube video. It goes over brand reliability and makes some suggestions. Hope it helps and good luck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2wZ87EKg-A
