No One Gives a $#*% What You Shoot Your Film On!

OK, so before I get bombarded with hate email please hear me out. I was speaking to my filmmaker inner circle the other day and the topic of format and camera came up. I’m a huge tech head. I love gear as much as the next filmmaker.

Hell, you can’t make movies without gear. Advances in filmmaking technology has liberated a generation of storytellers, filmmakers and content creators. Now does the audience give a CRAP about what camera you used to make your movie…NO!

If you want to know what it really takes to be a successful filmmaker in today’s world take a listen to this short podcast.

Alex, I get it and I agree...do a point. I learned lighting and exposure the hard way, with a Panasonic AF100. That camera could produce good images, provided you did *everything* right: lighting, exposure, white balance, gamma choice, etc. It was a painful, brutal teacher. After a brief fling with Blackmagic Cinema Cameras (which made easy everything the AF100 made difficult), I struggled with the prevalent and persistent problems of Moiré. Shooting musicians who wear whatever they want to wear in a studio, I just couldn't control for that problem. I made the expensive decision to switch to RED, and now I'm in the happy position that nobody cares what I shoot on, because what I deliver is consistently awesome. But *I* care, because I can work faster and more effectively. I can address second-order and third-order problems because the basics are so easily controlled with the RAW workflow. Some people like getting great results despite the fact that every step in the process is like surviving a trainwreck that gets hit by lighting during a tsunami. I like getting great results with less struggle. Maybe I'm getting too old?
