thoughts on the sony HVR Z1E

I was thinking of picking up a HVR-Z1E, the camera is quite old and uses mini-dv as the storage format, I was looking at it due to the amount of controls, decent lens and the fact that that I then wouldn't need an external recorder, apart from the fact that tape transfer takes a long time and requires firewire (I could easily install a firewire card into my PC) can anybody think of downsides to this camera/other options that would be better at a low price point (£200-£500)

Yeah, mini dv is a pain in the ass. I would never go back to dealing those. (I mean I do now but that's because I handle archival video material.) But I would never willingly shoot on mini dv.

Here's a list of some in your price range.

The Sony a5100 is a pretty decent camera. If you're looking for some 4k I would say the Panasonic G7 is your guy.

are there any other big problems apart from the transfer time? my problem is that I want those xlr inputs but slightly newer cameras start using cf and p2 cards which make the memory itself expensive compared to tape
what would be your thoughts on a camera like this, worth the extra outlay? im guessing controls would be sacrificed as it is more compact?

You should look into getting a Canon C100 mark i.

That should suit everything you need. It's going to be a little bit more expensive but you can get a solid deal on one on ebay.

No, there aren't any other problems than the transfer time and the fact that recording heads can become dirty. Now, I'm not proud of this, but a couple years ago I was able to fool people into thinking that footage from an old Canon XH-A1 was out of a Black Magic Cinema Camera. If you could put your hands on a decent one from $ 500 you would be amazed how the color science of that cam, and how it reacts in Resolve today. YEs, people were furious of my test and I was banned from a forum. But the point is, people couldn't tell the footage apart from a GH4, a BMCC and the Canon. When I switched the label between the Canon and the BMCC everybody agreed the Canon looked better. When I revealed the trick, oh boy! What have I done, was my first reaction.
