8 bit to 10 bit

Does it make sense to convert 8 bit footage to 10 bit before grading? will it help to avoid banding?

Probably not, but you can add a little bit of gaussian noise to your image to prevent banding. Done properly the noise looks a little like fine grain and stops banding from happening.

Doesn't matter if you do post in a video program that works internally in high bitdepth (higher than 8). Most programs do.

It can be useful, if you have a good upsampling software, that upsampling undersampled channel like in 4:2:0 sampling.
too many people underestimate how bad color sampled his video until they grade it, and how bad most of software manage it.
More saturated picture you have captured, more important is to upsampling correctly to avoid problems and banding.
