Editing 4K offline

This may be a stupid question, but I've been unable to find an answer and I haven't come across this issue before.

Can I shoot something in 4K, edit offline with 1080p proxies in an HD timeline, and then relink them to the original 4K files in a 4K timeline and still retain the 4K resolution?

I ask this because we are coming up on shooting a feature, which will be shot on several GH4's in 4K. After the edit we are sending it to a post house for audio mastering and color grading. We want to send our colorist a 4K timeline. Can that be done editing offline with 1080p proxies, or do the proxies have to be the desired resolution, which in this case is 4K?

Yes, it's like yo said. But if you shoot with 4k proress or other codec you will must be able to edit directly.
