Canon’s 4K video capable DSLR, the EOS-1D C, has marked an upset for the DSLR industry — and in more ways than one. Many feel that the addition of Motion-JPEG alone is not worth the camera’s $12K price point. This is particularly the case when weighing in controversial speculation that internally it’s mostly identical to its $7K 1080p sibling, the 1D X — and the fact that Canon is likely anticipating with gritted teeth the possibility of firmware hacks 4K-ifying the 1D X. That said, it could be a near-perfect blend of features depending on your application. Canon May 'Bring the Might of Its Legal Team' if You Modify 1D X or 1D C Firmware

That sounds promising for a potential firmware hack, right? We discussed not too long ago that the Canon 1D X and the Canon 1D C were not exactly the same camera, but that the 1D C had some internal hardware changes — at the very least a new heatsink, and probably some additions to the firmware to allow 4K recording. At the moment it’s still not clear how much the two cameras share in common, but with a quote like above, there is no doubt that the 1D X is probably capable of a lot more internally than the company is allowing at the moment. Whether or not your camera will explode when enabling those features is another consideration entirely, but we’re starting to get more details about these internals. (more…)

Is Canon's 4K DSLR, the 1D C, the Perfect Hybrid Photo/Video Camera?

A lot of the talk around the 1D C has been the somewhat high price for a camera that has only a slight advantage in specs compared to the 1D X, which is far cheaper. Price aside, it’s important to talk about this camera in a way that might make more sense than as a 4K motion picture camera. The 1D C may very well be the the most affordable and the easiest to use hybrid stills/video camera in existence. We’re not talking about a camera that shoots great stills and HD video, like most hybrids, but a camera that shoots great stills and 4K video which photographers can use to pull still images from. Canon's 1D C: Under the Hood, is It Really the 1D X's Twin?

There’s been some speculation recently that the yet-to-be released Canon EOS-1D C is internally identical to the $6800 Canon 1D X, and that the 1D C’s 4K resolution ability is simply a matter of superior firmware. Note the $7000 more you’d pay for the 1D C, and it becomes easy to see why this notion could be upsetting to some Canon shooters. Of course, given the limited experience the camera community has with the 1D C, speculation is about the best we can do at the moment. New Canon 1D X DSLR Can (Kind Of) Shoot 5K Video for Under $7,000

The RED EPIC was the first camera capable of shooting 5K video (which is more than 4 times bigger than 1080p), and not just at 24fps, but a whopping 120fps (in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio). Now it looks like RED is getting some…competition? Michael Hession over at Gizmodo has been experimenting with the new Canon 1D X, which is capable of still image bursts of 12fps RAW or 14fps JPEG. Philip Bloom Reviews the Canon 1D X, Big Brother of the Mark III. Is It Worth the Money Just for Video?

The Canon 1D X was announced all the way back in October of 2011, and only now is it starting to get in the hands of shooters. We reported on the increase in resolution between the 1D X and the 5D Mark III, but that increase comes at a price. Canon has decided to try to separate its Cinema EOS line with its DSLRs, but interestingly enough the new Canon 1D C DSLR (which is capable of 4K) is basically the same camera as the 1D X (sans 4K), yet it costs twice as much. Either way, it’s looking like the 1D X is the DSLR that most people wanted the 5D Mark III to be (at least in terms of resolution). (more…)

Canon Improves Video Resolution with the 1D X, but is It Better Than the Mark III?

We’ve been having a discussion about downscaling in another thread about a Canon DSLR (the T4i to be exact), and today we’ve finally got a sample video from the Canon 1D X that seems to show the camera out-resolving the 5D Mark III. Though the 1D X was announced back in October 2011, it may very well be October 2012 before these finally get out in the open in real numbers. It was common knowledge that the launch was going to be a “paper” announcement only, but the 1D X has missed its delivery date numerous times. Either way, the camera is going to be released sooner rather than later, and while its price point is well out of the reach of many readers ($6,800), it looks like all that extra horsepower under the hood gives it a bit more resolution in video mode than the other new full frame Canon camera, the 5D Mark III. Dan Chung sat down with Canon’s Mike Burnhill to get a look at the video features of the Canon EOS-1D X. Compared to earlier hands-on looks at the camera, this one is much mor focused on the video features we’re all wondering about: aliasing, rolling shutter, codec, time code, audio, and HDMI out. Despite the fact that Canon isn’t letting footage out of its grasp yet, Dan asks all the pertinent questions, as you’d expect given he’s one of the forefathers of HDSLR video. A Sample Video and a Hands-on Glimpse at the Canon EOS-1D X DSLR

Since Canon announced their new flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X, I haven’t had much luck finding video samples from the camera. Thanks to Engadget there’s a hands-on video below, which demonstrates the size of the camera (like all 1D cameras, it’s much larger than the 5D form factor). But as far as sample videos go I’ve only seen one to date — please share in the comments if you’ve seen others! Canon Announces EOS-1D X Camera with Full Frame Sensor and Enhanced Video Performance

Canon today announced their new top-of-the-line DSLR, the EOS 1D X. Merging their various 1D models into “one D to rule them all,” the full frame, 18 megapixel, 14FPS still shooter brings a lot of new features to the table as a still camera (gigabit Ethernet, dual CF cards, increased ISO range) and the first significant video updates to Canon’s HDSLR line since the 5D and 7D era. The 1D X records at the same 1080p frame rates as previous Canon HDSLRs, but offers new compression options including an intraframe codec, reduced moire, timecode embedding, longer single take time of 30 minutes, and adjustable (during a take) manual audio levels. This is all thanks to Dual DIGIC 5+ image and data processors (all HDSLRs since the Canon 5D Mark II have been based on the DIGIC 4). The 1D X will ship in March for $6,800, after which we can assume (and hope) that the DIGIC 5 features will migrate down to lower-end HDSLRs.
