Action Cameras Face Off in a Battle Royale: GoPro, Sony, Contour, and Drift

GoPro might be the leader in action cameras, but there are plenty of other companies trying to get in on the action with competing products. Sony and JVC have both recently introduced cameras with a similar form factor, and of course, there are a few other players like Contour that have a number of models. Sony's GoPro Alternative, the Action Cam, to Be Released This September

A few months ago, Sony announced that they were going to be entering the action/extreme sports camera arena and go head-to-head with GoPro and Contour. While GoPro seems to be the go-to action sports camera, Sony is hoping to chip away with a similarly-priced alternative. That product, the Action Cam HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15, will be released this September and will be able to shoot up to 120fps. Check out an in-depth video showing off the new Action Cam below. (more…)

Get More Out of Your GoPro with a Varifocal Zoom Lens

Not too long ago John Hess from FilmmakerIQ shared a few videos about replacing the lens on your GoPro camera. Now he’s made a new video showing how he’s installed a brand new varifocal zooms lens in his GoPro which actually acts as a macro lens. With all of the new action or POV cameras announced recently, like those from Sony and JVC, it will be interesting to see if those cameras will be as moddable as the GoPro cameras have proven to be. JVC Getting in on the Action Camera Market with the GC-XA1 Adixxion

Not to be outdone by GoPro, Contour, and newcomer Sony, JVC is entering the action camera market with the unfortunately named GC-XA1 Adixxion. Are we about to see an explosion in action or “pov” cameras? GoPro has a healthy lead in this area, and it looks like the big guys, namely Sony and JVC, feel that the semi-disposable wearable camera market is only going to grow in the near future. JVC, however, is looking at the higher-end possibilities with this camera, and they’ve made the Adixxion a lot more fully-featured than the competition. (more…)

GoPro Not the New Kid on the Block Anymore, Sony Releasing Their Own 'Action Camera' This Fall

Sony, not content to compete in…well, pretty much every segment of consumer and professional technology, has decided to enter the “action camera” arena with their own miniscule device. Sony, being the enormous company that they are, felt they could make a dent in the overwhelming lead that GoPro has in the area of action sports cameras. Sony has certainly made small cameras in the past, but this is the first time that they’ve built one to be worn specifically as an extreme or action sports camera. (more…)
