Izotope RX3A few weeks ago, we shared a post about using Adobe Audition’s built-in noise reduction tools to rescue bad production audio. While I personally have been satisfied by the results that I get from the suite of tools in Audition, many of the comments on our Facebook post and the article itself mentioned a popular noise-reduction plugin called Izotope RX3. The new features are numerous, and some of them — like After Effects features inside of Premiere Pro and the ability to transcode industry-standard DCPs in Media Encoder — are incredibly welcome. Hence the reason that ADR is such a widespread practice throughout the narrative filmmaking industry. In almost all cases, even with the most talented boom operators and on-set mixers, there will be imperfections in the production sound. Adobe Creative CloudDespite the controversy surrounding Adobe’s switch to a subscription-based model, its Creative Cloud line of products has seen several useful updates for users. For instance, Adobe has added native RED DRAGON & CinemaDNG RAW support via GPU acceleration, plus improved round-tripping with its color correction software SpeedGrade. This year at NAB, Adobe pushed forward with the addition of some newly native abilities, in addition to the dynamic linking its suite is already known for (i.e., no switch from PP to AE needed for certain effects, and vice-versa). Despite some initial hiccups in public perception, Creative Cloud has since taken the video post production world by storm. Many are familiar with the traditional casting call. You set up a time, send out the sides, and actors come in one by one and read for a part. This is normally a long process, and it takes a lot of work to weed through your choices to find the perfect actor for a role. Thanks to technology, this is the old way of doing things, at least according to Bret Easton Ellis (writer of American Psycho) and the producers for his new film The Canyons (directed by Paul Shrader). They’ve already run a successful Kickstarter campaign, and now they’re trying to utilize technology in a completely new way, by making the casting call a social affair. More »
