Though much of the Canon news lately has been on the Magic Lantern RAW video hacks for the lower-end DSLRs, the company has finally decided to offer an upgrade to 4K 25p on the 1D C. If you were expecting to upgrade right away, however, you might be slightly disappointed. (more…)

Now there is word that we’ll get it after NAB, and an image has been released that shows it being tested on the camera with an additional frame rate we’ve never seen before. We have also been looking forward to the clean HDMI update on the Canon 5D Mark III, which at the moment is still scheduled for sometime this month. At that time, the C300 was retailing for $16,000 and the C100 could be had for $6,500. In terms of the price difference, it was feasible for there to be a camera in-between (even if spec wise it doesn’t make much sense). Now, Canon has dropped the C300 price by $2,000 until April 30th for both EF and PL models, and it very well could be a permanent price drop. We’ve also got a rumor of a replacement 24 Megapixel camera for the aging Canon 7D. So what does that mean for the rest of their product lines? (more…)

Canon Rumors had previously reported that we may be getting the update this week, but according to Canon’s Germany site, it’s going to be coming quite a bit later than that. (more…)

The first DSLR that can shoot 4K internally should be cause for celebration, as it’s the first time a camera of this size has been able to reach that standard. The 1D C has received a mixed reaction, however, mostly because of its price, which is quite a bit above anything most people would call “affordable” for a DSLR, but also because of the fact that we have some evidence it’s practically the same camera as the $5,000 cheaper Canon 1D X. Either way, Philip Bloom’s video review has been quite eye-opening, and this camera makes a bit more sense in the market after seeing what it can do. Click through to check out that video as well as some more clips. (more…)

While it’s not due for another few months, the firmware update for the 5D Mark III to enable clean HDMI is one of the first signs that they feel a bit of the pressure from the rest of the market, and they want to match specs with cameras like the Nikon D800. Now it looks like an update may be coming for the $12,000 1D C DSLR to enable 25fps at 4K, and there is word they may be working on addressing some other issues with the camera. (more…)

Many feel that the addition of Motion-JPEG alone is not worth the camera’s $12K price point. This is particularly the case when weighing in controversial speculation that internally it’s mostly identical to its $7K 1080p sibling, the 1D X — and the fact that Canon is likely anticipating with gritted teeth the possibility of firmware hacks 4K-ifying the 1D X. That said, it could be a near-perfect blend of features depending on your application. At the moment it’s still not clear how much the two cameras share in common, but with a quote like above, there is no doubt that the 1D X is probably capable of a lot more internally than the company is allowing at the moment. Whether or not your camera will explode when enabling those features is another consideration entirely, but we’re starting to get more details about these internals. (more…)

There is still a missing camera in Canon’s Cinema EOS line, between $2,000 and $6,500, and there is word it may be coming in a DSLR-type camera. (more…)

Price aside, it’s important to talk about this camera in a way that might make more sense than as a 4K motion picture camera. The 1D C may very well be the the most affordable and the easiest to use hybrid stills/video camera in existence. We’re not talking about a camera that shoots great stills and HD video, like most hybrids, but a camera that shoots great stills and 4K video which photographers can use to pull still images from. Click through to check out a video showing off exactly that aspect of the camera. (more…)

Note the $7000 more you’d pay for the 1D C, and it becomes easy to see why this notion could be upsetting to some Canon shooters. Of course, given the limited experience the camera community has with the 1D C, speculation is about the best we can do at the moment. A recent post at Canon Rumors, however, may offer some insight to prospective 1D C buyers who might be disheartened by the “twin” rumors. Read on for more details. (more…)

Canon has decided to try to separate its Cinema EOS line with its DSLRs, but interestingly enough the new Canon 1D C DSLR (which is capable of 4K) is basically the same camera as the 1D X (sans 4K), yet it costs twice as much. Though the 1D X was announced back in October 2011, it may very well be October 2012 before these finally get out in the open in real numbers. It was common knowledge that the launch was going to be a “paper” announcement only, but the 1D X has missed its delivery date numerous times. Either way, the camera is going to be released sooner rather than later, and while its price point is well out of the reach of many readers ($6,800), it looks like all that extra horsepower under the hood gives it a bit more resolution in video mode than the other new full frame Canon camera, the 5D Mark III. (more…)

Unfortunately the event was plagued by projection and sound problems (the in-house staff are the only people who can touch that stuff). It’s ironic that this happened to a room full of nerds who understand the issues and could have fixed it pretty easily! Regardless we got to see a bit of Adobe CS6, the new Smoke, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Shane Hurlbut talked about the Canon 1DC, and we got a wonderfully hilarious talk from Morgan Spurlock, who went into detail about his career. (more…)
