The 5D Mark II is arguably the device that turned independent filmmaking upside down, single-handedly — and as an individual piece of engineering may be as important as any single and inexpensive video format has ever been. Since its release (and the waves it created), the camera has put the power to create filmic footage in the hands of just about anyone. Now, as such, Canon seems to have decided that the camera’s work is done, because the company’s site is now indicating the discontinuation of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. (more…)

What would normally have been announced very late tonight or early tomorrow (east coast time), looks to have been leaked ahead of time. Canon Rumors has posted a list of specs and a few images that we can almost safely assume are official, since the announcement is less than 24 hours away. These images are of the professionally photographed variety, likely what we would be seeing in a press release. They also perfectly match that photo we reported on here awhile ago. Here is the complete list of specs and my thoughts below. (more…)

Also, since Canon added 24p and manual audio controls to the official firmware, there was less need for ML. Programmer AJ Newman has come to rescue with a new version of the firmware, entitled AJ5.0, which is a ground-up rewrite with a brand new interface that offers some great new features. Here’s a look at what’s new in this branch of the ML firmware: (more…)

In the layman’s hands the process is typically reserved for still images because combining two moving images in post is nigh impossible. But Soviet Montage Productions took two Canon 5D Mark IIs and cleverly used a beam splitter to feed each DSLR the exact same image. The resulting 1:30 clip is exactly the kind of camera demonstration that people love to Twitter about, whether the demo is significant or not. But here’s the thing about this clip (particularly the first shot): it’s gorgeous. (more…)
