By now, if you’re planning on submitting a screenplay to the Academy Nicholl Fellowships, hopefully you’ve already done so. If not, your time to submit is quickly dwindling. The final deadline for the 2013 Academy Nicholl Fellowships is 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, Wed. May 1, but don’t wait until the last minute. This is a combination PSA/light a fire under your a** post to make sure you are writing, rewriting, and rewriting some more to get your screenplay ready for the Academy Nicholl Fellowships regular deadline of Apr. 10. I’ll be honest, my latest script will not be ready by that deadline (needs a little more seasoning – okay, a lot more seasoning), but if you’ve been diligent, hopefully your script will be ready. As always, when evaluating a competition, I consider what it will do to further the career of an aspiring screenwriter. So when the Chinese government decides to launch a screenwriting competition specifically for U.S.-based screenwriters of any nationality, that’s not a screenwriting competition you hear about every day. Equal Writes Competition Wants to Make Your Rebellious, Diverse Genre Film for $250K

As I’ve mentioned on NFS before, I think screenwriting contests should be evaluated on what they offer entrants to launch and further their careers. Many won’t really help a new screenwriter launch or further a career, so when a new competition is announced, I’m always a bit skeptical. Nevertheless, the new Equal Writes competition presented by We Make Movies and Duly Noted has me intrigued as they are looking for smart, rebellious, diverse genre films that can be produced for $250K or less, and they want seven finalists to pitch their movies in seven minutes in front of three producers and a live audience for the chance to get their movies made. 2013 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Now Open, Early Deadline March 1st

Most screenwriting competitions are simply out to take your money. They won’t help you with your career. In fact, writing a great screenplay and making industry contacts who may then consider your screenplay will help you with your screenwriting career much more than a screenwriting contest. In other words, hone your screenwriting skills and cultivate industry relationships. So, as far as screenwriting competitions go, if you submit to any at all, I suggest only submitting to those that can actually help you launch or further a screenwriting career. As such, very few meet this criteria. One of the few is the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, now open for applications for 2013. (more…)

Some of you have had problems with it, some of you haven’t, and some of you might even do it, but Alamo Drafthouse has a strict policy against it. What am I referring to? Talking and texting during movies of course. The Alamo is a specialty theater that serves real food and beer during the film, and they take their no talking or texting policy very seriously. Screenwriting competitions: Nicholl, Scriptapalooza, Script P.I.M.P

The April 1 deadline for the last two screenplay competitions I posted has passed, but if you’ve got a feature or TV script sitting on your hard drive doing nothing, it’s worth checking out Scriptapalooza and Script P.I.M.P (seriously, that’s your name?) for a chance at prize money and exposure. After all, those in the know say “films get made by getting them out there, opening up, and making relationships — the more you open up and get feedback, that’s how your film gets made.”

When it comes to screenplay competitions, however, the BMOC is the Nicholl Fellowship, which is part of AMPAS (better known as the group that puts together the Oscars). From the horse’s mouth:

The Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting is the world’s most esteemed screenwriting competition. Each year up to five $30,000 fellowships are awarded to authors who have previously earned less than $5,000 writing for film or television.

The Nicholl deadline is May 1.

Babelgum's 3rd Online Film Festival

Babelgum’s 3rd Online Film Festival is currently accepting submissions, with a deadline of March 28. Submissions are voted on by Babelgum’s online audience in each of the following categories: Animation (5 min max), Narrative (15 min max), Nonnarrative (5 min max), and Documentary (15 min max). As for prizes, from their site:

If you are the 1st Place winner of a Jury Award, you will receive a cash prize of US $3,000. If you are a runner-up, you will receive US $1,000. The winner of the Best Viral Short Award will receive US $2,000. If you are the winner of an Audience Award, you will receive a prize to be determined by Babel and announced on the Babelgum website.¹ If you are the winner of the Stoli Emerging Filmmaker Award, your film will be screened along with other winners and honored at a reception during the Tribeca Film Festival.

If you’ve got a short that could use some exposure and/or prize money, this could be a good opportunity.
