It’s no secret that the ‘new’ Mac Pro isn’t here yet, but if it’s not coming anytime soon, you’re going to be Mac Pro-less in Europe for the foreseeable future. That’s because the Mac Pro does not comply with a new European regulation set to go into effect March 1st. No one really knows what’s coming in the next version, though we had a terrific guest post talking a bit about what the new Mac Pro could be like. But what if Apple went even more radical (but still functional) with their new design? Something weird is going on. We know the Mac Pro hasn’t had a substantial upgrade in some time. We know that something is looming over the horizon, but we don’t know what, exactly. We also know that Apple will probably over-charge us for it (or it wouldn’t quite feel right for anybody). And while it may not be fair to fault a machine that’s still quite hefty and robust for losing to brand new ones in spec tests and benchmark performance — just what are we waiting for here? Apple today released four new iMacs with the usual slew of processor/graphics upgrades, including new Intel Sandy Bridge quad-core processors, AMD Radeon HD graphics processors, FaceTime HD camera, and a new port around back (two of them, in fact) that should be a boon for video editors: Thunderbolt. Marking the first time Thunderbolt ports are available on a desktop computer, the new 10Gbps standard is up to 12 times faster than Firewire 800, making for faster video transfers from compatible devices. After months of building and testing, my comprehensive step-by-step guide for How to Build a Hackintosh is here.
