It’s very surreal to waltz through my local big-box store and think “Wow, I could make a real movie with that Canon.” It was even more surreal to see some of that same gear in the Black Friday ads. As we’ve seen with the “DSLR Revolution,” the democratization of filmmaking comes from amazing imaging devices becoming accessible (cheap) to the masses. Well, this year the revolution continued, as they say, as there were a lot of filmmaker-relevant deals going on for Black Friday. But what about a roundup of (still ongoing) Cyber Monday deals? The RED SCARLET, with a Side SSD Mount and Aluminum Canon lens mount, is currently selling for $11,900 direct from RED. However, due to a project wherein a large number of Scarlets were needed to simultaneously shoot one shot, there are ~~now a limited number of these cameras available~~ [UPDATE: no more cameras available] with one minute or less of record time on them for $7,100 (that’s $4,800 off if you’re counting beans). Canon 5D Mark II, Still the Best Full Frame HDSLR, Goes on Sale with Free Bundled Accessories

I saw mentioned on a few other blogs that the price of the Canon 5D Mark II — still the ~~only~~ best full frame video camera in the world¹ — had dropped to $2k. “Nice,” I thought, thinking back to how I paid $2500 for mine — but I wasn’t sure if that was cause for an entire blog post. Then I saw that, because of a price war, B&H is throwing in a whole bundle of stuff included in that $2k price: a SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro CompactFlash Card, a Lowepro Adventura 170 Shoulder Bag, and the Red Giant B&H Video Production Software Bundle (reportedly worth $720 collectively). And free US shipping. You’re not going to find a better deal than this — the only question is whether you’d rather wait for the next full frame HDSLR from Canon (which is the 1DX… which will retail for $7k). The 5D Mark III probably won’t be out for quite some time, given Canon needs to give the 1DX room the breathe. One other thing to mention: the Mark II has terrific resale value due in part to its excellence as a still camera.

Filmmaker Magazine's 40% Off Holiday Sale Makes it Even More of a No-Brainer

My favorite magazine about independent film is, well, “the magazine of independent film:” Filmmaker Magazine. The quarterly mag, which always includes film festival reports, invaluable interviews with directors, and several must-read columns, is now only $10 a year. If you live in the digital realm, it’s only $6. Six dollars! It goes without saying, but this makes a great (and cheap) Christmakwanzakah gift for any filmmaker friends. (more…)

Canon Double Instant Rebates at B&H Photo Expire January 8th

Just a quick note that NoFilmSchool partner B&H Photo has launched a new page allowing for a much easier way of accessing their double instant rebates — savings of up to $400 — when you buy a Canon DSLR (60D, 7D, 5D Mark II, or 1D Mark IV) with a Canon lens or Speedlight flash. Choose your DSLR and a lens; it will put both in the shopping cart and show the instant rebate right away. When I posted this previously it was a bit confusing, as the rebates didn’t show up unless you clicked through to the shopping cart. Deals expire January 8, so if you’re looking for a Canon DSLR this might be a good opportunity.

Pay What You Want for Independent Games as Part of the Humble Indie Bundle

The Humble Indie Bundle is a package of independently-developed games (5 in all), that work on all platforms, are free of DRM, and are currently being sold with a “pay what you want” model. On top of this, when you set your price, you can also determine what % of your purchase goes to the developers, and what goes to charity. For those of you in America, happy Thanksgiving/Black Friday. In the spirit of retailers slashing prices to engender consumer stampedes, I went searching for Black Friday deals specific to filmmakers. I discovered, however, that most pro camera stores don’t participate in such an event, which is apparently constrained to the consumer world. So instead, here are some deals that might apply to filmmakers, at least on the low end (for example, you won’t see someone like RED slashing prices on a $25k camcorder). (more…)
