As we approach midnight in most places around the world (with some already celebrating the new year), the hardworking team over at Magic Lantern has delivered more updates to the trusty Canon DSLRs. We now have a second alpha for the Canon 7D — a camera that we previously thought was unhackable — and more updates are on their way with support for the Canon T4i, 6D, and 40D. Canon EOS-M Has Been Hacked, Magic Lantern Alpha 3 for the 5D Mark III is Out

The team over at Magic Lantern continues to make things happen. The camera has barely been released and they’ve already gotten inside the firmware for the Canon EOS-M mirrorless camera (which shares a similar sensor with the Canon T4i). A firmware update is still a little ways off, but it’s another good sign that most (if not all) Canon cameras can be hacked with a little bit of work. Also of note, Magic Lantern has released the 3rd Alpha for the 5D Mark III, which addresses a few issues from the last Alpha. (more…)

Significant Magic Lantern Update, Version 2.3 for Canon DSLRs, Now Available to Download for Free

Magic Lantern, the well-known third party firmware solution for Canon DSLRs that we discussed a few weeks ago, has finally released their newest firmware version 2.3 as a free download. Since it takes a tremendous amount of work to put together these firmware updates, they were asking for a donation in exchange for the download, or you could compile the firmware update yourself for free (which isn’t very straightforward). Magic Lantern No Longer a Hack, V2.3 is a Mature Release with More Features Than Any Canon Camera

Magic Lantern, the ~~hack~~ third party firmware solution for Canon cameras, has come a long, long way since its first release. Stability and new features have been the top priorities for the team, and it looks like with the newest release they are delivering on both counts. Even though Canon has been increasing the feature set of the higher-end cameras like the Canon 5D Mark III and the 1D X, they have been trying to differentiate the video and photo product lines as much as possible. For those familiar with the traditional features of a video camera, using DSLR presents quite a few challenges. The goal of Magic Lantern, however, is to introduce in firmware all of these quirks that make shooting with real video cameras that much easier. (more…)

Hands-On with the New Mirrorless Canon EOS M Camera: Are Aliasing and Moire Improved?

The Canon EOS M was only just announced, but there are some hands-on impressions already floating around. The camera marks Canon’s first attempt at a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, and they’ve gone with a very subtle design both in the body and the new EF-M lenses. Sebastian over at cinema5D was invited by Canon to a pre-announcement event last week, and was able to play with the camera a bit. Canon Announces the Mirrorless EOS M Camera with Extended Video Recording Times

Canon, after seemingly endless rumors, has finally revealed their mirrorless offering, the EOS M. Though it’s not the retro design some were hoping for, it does pack a nice sensor inside very similar to the new T4i (if not the same exact one). If you’re already a Canon shooter, this body can be as professional or slimmed down as you want it to be, and you can shoot with the lenses you already own, or get into the new Canon mirrorless lenses. The big question is performance, does it stack up to the DSLRs when it comes to video and photos? (more…)
