First Footage from a 4K-Enabled Sony FS700 & How Much It Will Cost to Upgrade Your Camera

The Sony FS700 made quite a bit of noise at last year’s NAB, not only for its extremely high frame rates, but because the camera was going to get 4K RAW support at some point in the future. While concrete info was almost nonexistent at that time (and for many months later), the details have started to emerge, and it looks like 4K on the camera will only come with a paid hardware upgrade. We’ve also got more details from Convergent Design about their new monitor/recorder the Odyssey, and how that fits into Sony’s 4K/2K recording plan, as well as some of the first footage available showing off the 4K RAW mode. Sony’s tight cluster of NAB 2013 4K-centric announcements featured some of the most affordably priced UHD TVs yet seen all the way over to the external recorder-enabled 4K shooting capabilities of its FS700. The latter announcement also made it clear that Sony is looking to put a wide variety of encoding and format options into the hands of shooters — and beyond, potentially. Aside from external and third-party recording expansion, Sony is opening up its efficient 4K XAVC codec — native to the F5 family — to the consumer as well as the prosumer. Fast & RAW: Sony FS700 Achieves 4K Via External Recorders, 120FPS Burst & 240FPS 2K

Since its release last year, we’ve know that Sony’s FS700 — the high-speed ‘little brother to-be’ of the F5 and F55 — had 4K capabilities awaiting in its future. This option, with 4K RAW speeds up to 120fps burst shooting and 2K RAW up to 240fps (continuous) is made possible by a ‘middle-man’ interface/adapter module, the HXR-IF5 along with the AXS-R5 recorder. What we probably didn’t expect was support for 2K CinemaDNG at up to 240fps, or even 4K DPX at a more modest 30fps (still — it’s DPX) by way of another external recorder, the Convergent Design Odyssey7Q. Sony FS700 4K Recorder Support Coming in July, and Complete F5/F55 Firmware Timeline Revealed

A lawsuit from rival RED hasn’t stopped the Sony F5 and F55 cameras from shipping on-time, and now we’ve got some more concrete information about what is currently enabled and when we can expect future features to be implemented. For FS700 owners, we also have a pretty good idea of when you can expect full 4K support from Sony with their AXS-R5 recorder, which needs a separate piece, the HXR-IFR5, to interface with the camera. Sony FS700 4K Firmware Upgrade Could Be Weeks Away, Priced Similar to F3 S-Log Update

Speaking of 4K, what seemed like a long ways off, the 4K update for the FS700 may be coming sooner rather than later. According to sources at the recent IFA show, the upgrade that will allow 4K RAW recording from the 3G HD-SDI port of the Sony FS700 may actually be weeks away, and not months as originally thought. Even better news, it looks like it will work with third party recorders like the soon-to-be-released AJA Ki Pro Quad. Pricing information for the upgrade is a little more unclear, however. (more…)

If you already bought an FS700, or you’ve been waiting on the sidelines so far, there is a big issue with slow motion that many who’ve shot with Phantom cameras might already be familiar with: flicker. Now that film sets are littered with different types of fixtures, it’s important to understand how shooting slow motion under different light sources can induce some amount of flicker. Certain fixtures produce more flicker than others (especially at different shutter speeds), but in the video below, Hello World Communications takes a look at some of the most popular fixtures for film lighting and how they deal with flicker. FS700 Price Confirmed - It's Under $10k, but by Just How Much?

When Sony’s FS700 camera was first announced, it was rumored to be under $10k, with some folks pegging it at $8k. When the European version’s price came out at roughly 8,000 euros (~$10,500) the promise of being under $10,000 transformed into “probably around $10,000″. So what am I going on about? Well, the price has finally been confirmed in the U.S., and it’s just as hoped for — $8,000 dollars for the camera body, or $8,600 with an E-mount zoom lens. With this announcement, I figure it’s a nice moment to check out some more test videos shot with the camera that look at how well it handles whip pans, high contrast lighting, auto-focusing situations and more: (more…)

FS700 Video Roundup - 4 Videos That Will Make You Want to Buy or Wait

The FS700 has dominated much of the camera buzz in the couple of weeks heading into NAB, and with the early announcement comes early footage. Last week we posted the official launch film that excerpted a number of test shorts shot by various DP’s with a pre-production FS700, and over the past week the full shorts have been coming on-line. These tests by Peter Prevec, James Miller, and Den Lennie/James Tonkin, show off just what the camera can do with a variety of subjects — from dirt bike races, to samba dancers to birds flying against the sun’s light. World's First Sony FS700 Short Film Reveals Class-Leading Slow Motion Abilities

Sony's New FS-700 Revealed - 4K-ready Super 35mm Camcorder for Less Than $10k?

Looks like Sony has decided to make some waves with the next model in their line of NEX cameras — the FS-700. Building on the FS100 (Super 35mm sized sensor, interchangeable E-mount lenses, XLR inputs, etc.), with some nice additions (internal ND filters, 3G-SDI output), they have decided to throw in some very big features — up to 10X slow motion at 1080p resolution (i.e 240 fps), and an upgrade path to 4K acquisition/delivery.
