This need for DITs and post houses, however, may evaporate just as quickly as it has arisen — at least according to the predictions of Michael Cioni. As the CEO of post house Light Iron, he has helped pioneer RED workflows at the highest level of filmmaking, so his word is not to be taken lightly — particularly since he’s predicting the end of what his and any other post house does as we know it by 2017. Furthermore, what cameras (and therefore camera teams) will have to take care of themselves is staggering, especially taking a look at the duties fulfilled by today’s high-end DIT carts — including those assembled by Light Iron itself. (more…)

While watching the episode, beyond thinking about what I was seeing on screen, many of my thoughts were related to what I wasn’t seeing on screen: aliasing, moire, or rolling shutter. Putting the camera in the hands of a great DP is the first step to avoiding these drawbacks, and since seeing the episode I’ve been wondering about the technical details of the production; thankfully the interwebs have the answers. (more…)

The DSLR-shot season finale of House in full. Shot on a 5d Mark II.

The season finale of House was famously shot on a DSLR, specifically the 5d Mark II. FOX doesn’t post full episodes online until 8 days after they air on TV, which is why the season finale hasn’t been available anywhere — until now. Here’s the DSLR-shot episode in full:
