J.J. Abrams and Valve CEO Gabe Newell Discuss Storytelling in Film vs. Video Games
Nowadays, major franchises get the royal treatment upon release. Some video game series are expanded with original novels or comic books between release dates. The opening of many big films occurs with novelizations and video games accompanying them. The problem is, I haven’t seen many video game adaptations I’ve been able to appreciate as good films in their own right, and all the while games seem to be getting more and more realistic. How comparable, or even compatible is storytelling between video games and movies? If anybody could figure it out, it’d be “Star Wars Episode VII director” J.J. Abrams and Valve co-founder/CEO Gabe Newell. Check out their full D.I.C.E. 2013 keynote discussion below. More »
It’s an exciting time for filmmakers and storytellers who are exploring ways to enhance their stories via the web. One of the new genres to emerge is the “web” or “connected” documentary. In essence, these are documentary projects that try to engage viewers via interactive tools — from customizing the experience depending on when and where it is accessed, to providing a “choose your own adventure” structure. This isn’t your typical documentary, and if you’re not wary as you undertake one of these projects it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Ben Moskowitz provides important tips to keep in mind as you explore interactive tools; and if you haven’t experienced a connected documentary, we’ve got a couple for you to check out: More »
In the blockbuster game world, recent multimillion-dollar releases like L.A. Noire (which was the first video game to play at the Tribeca Film Festival) and Portal 2 have taken videogame storytelling up a notch. If this demo of the forthcoming game BioShock Infinite is any indication, first-person shooters are packing in the action, set-pieces, ideas, and storytelling of blockbuster films — but handing controls over to the player. And that’s the whole point, right? Take a look at this video, which isn’t a pre-rendered trailer, but rather 15 minutes of screen-captured gameplay : More »
In case you missed it, Microsoft’s motion-sensing add-on to their Xbox 360 gaming console, Microsoft Kinect, launched this week. Word on the street is the software giant is spending $400 million just to promote the device — more than the entire budget of Avatar, depending on who you ask. More than just a Nintendo Wii rip-off, however, the Kinect portends major changes to come in natural user interfaces as well as a further push into online video distribution by Microsoft (relevant disclosure: we had a Non-Disclosure Agreement with Microsoft last year regarding our project 3rd Rail. Oops, was I not supposed to disclose that?). More »
Regardless of your political affiliation, if you’re an American, today’s the day to, ah, “rock the vote.” This video may come from a PAC you don’t agree with, but I hope you appreciate the clever writing and Facebook-based personalization features all the same. What do you do when you have a final studio album from the late, great Johnny Cash, but no way to have the legendary man in black appear in the music video? Crowdsource it. This is what director Chris Milk has done with Cash’s song “Ain’t No Grave,” setting up a Flash-powered website that allows visitors to hand-draw individual frames of the video. The video is then dynamically pieced together from these frames, based on ratings by viewers — in this way, it is an always-changing work of art. Here’s the video in its current incarnation: More »
Prison Valley is an interesting French documentary/interactive experience that examines Canon City, Colorado — home to 13 prisons, one of which is the first Supermax prison (widely considered to be the new “Alcatraz”). The web doc consists of brief filmed segments interspersed with interactive sequences, and offers a glimpse at where documentary film may be headed in the online space. Unfortunately it seems that I can’t embed a sequence, so here’s the blurb: More »
