Not all glass is created equal. Some is shaped into things you drink out of. Some becomes windows, windshields, and portholes. And some become the tools you use every day to create beautiful images. Something as insanely resolute as 4K (or even 8K) broadcast and stereoscopic 48fps can only look so good with a junk piece of glass placed between the medium and the image — which can also work great if that’s the type of look you’re going for. The tilt-shift effect is nothing new — if you’ve ever been a large format photography shooter you know how interesting it can look. It wasn’t until the Lensbaby line of lenses that tilt-shift really became widely used in everyday photography. DSLR video, on the other hand, brought a whole new group of users to the beautiful effects that can come from these lenses. There is an interesting project on Kickstarter right now for a tilt-shift lens called the Lynny Lens System. It’s nearing the end of its crowdfunding campaign and it’s aiming to be a cheaper alternative to Lensbaby. Check out more details as well as a sample video below. (more…)

Digital cinematography often looks too clean to my eye, and I like “messing up” the images a bit (whenever appropriate). To this end, I bought a Lensbaby Composer Pro earlier this year, and, as always, my timing seems to be the opposite of impeccable: Lensbaby has just released a lens kit specifically for movie makers, aptly named the Movie Maker’s Kit. Lensbabies are wonderful specialty lenses that create selective defocus effects on DSLRs (or SLRs, for that matter). But as soon as I pull the trigger and buy a Lensbaby Composer — which I love — Lensbaby comes out with the new Lensbaby Composer Pro. What does the new Pro offer over my oh-so amateur model?
