There are plenty of vital positions in the entertainment industry we inevitably end up appreciating less than we probably should. So much has to go on in the background for each element to crystallize and become integrated into the final product in an organized way. The agent is a large part of this — the intermediary between the creative artist (writer, director, actor, etc.) and what their next gig will be — or, from another perspective, where their next paycheck will come from. There are many great ways to connect to other filmmakers today. We have sites like Production Hub, Mandy.com, and even Craigslist that are fantastic for crewing up and getting on crews. However, when I’m playing “closer to the chest”, I find myself sourcing locally nowadays on Facebook. I like to see who knows who of closer friends, and I prefer direct connections to general callouts. Let's Wrap Up the #Manchild Campaign with a Party in NYC Friday at 8pm (Live Online at 9)

I’ll be live streaming/chatting the end of my Kickstarter campaign this Friday (September 23) here on NoFilmSchool starting at 9pm Eastern (the campaign’s deadline at 11:59pm). If you live in NYC or are here for Independent Film Week, though, here’s a great opportunity to meet and network with other filmmakers. With only 4 days left and a lot of ground to cover, I can’t say whether it will be a party celebrating the SUCCESS of the campaign — but either way it should be a fun time!

Come on down to the brand new bar/lounge/theater Indie Screen (pictured, though it should be a bit more full than in the photo!) in Williamsburg, drink and be merry, mix with other filmmakers and creatives, and share your own story (join me on-screen and let the rest of the NoFilmSchool community know what creative projects you’re working on)! We’ll kick it off at 8pm, start the stream at 9, and watch the countdown until midnight when we’ll see the Kickstarter ticker hit “0 hours left.” RSVP on Facebook please, as the venue wants to know how many people are coming and I honestly have no idea!

Networking Opportunities Abound at the 2010 Independent Filmmaker Conference

Independent Film Week kicks off in New York City this Sunday the 19th, and the main event of the week is the Independent Filmmaker Conference. It’s going to be a networking clusterlove, with reps from CAA, ICM, Kickstarter, Paramount, Sony Pictures Classics, Focus Features, Fox Searchlight, IFC, and festival programmers from Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, Toronto, Berlin, Rotterdam and more out and about. I’ll be there as part of the No Borders Project Forum with my transmedia project 3rd Rail, but I’m going to try to make it to as many panels as I can — of which there are 33 in all, covering the latest in need-to-know info for indies: (more…)

The WorkBook Project and the New School present DIY DAYS NYC. On Saturday April 3rd DIY DAYS comes to the New School in NYC for a day of talks, workshops and networking focused on creativity in the digital age. The focus of the day will be how those working in film, music, gaming, design, and software can fund, create, distribute and sustain from their creative efforts.
