EditReady

Earlier in the summer, Divergent Media, a software company whose tools need no introduction in the video production world, released EditReady, a Mac transcoding app with a tremendous claim, that it was supposedly the world’s fastest transcoder for Quicktime conversion. In a market that is fairly saturated with transcoding solutions for filmmakers, that is definitely a bold claim, to say the least. However, after reading about what sets EditReady apart from its competitors, then testing the app for myself, I’m ready to say that the claim is indeed a valid one. I also talked briefly with Mike Woodworth, the CEO of Divergent Media, who’s also the lead developer of EditReady, and learned more about how the software was designed, what it can and cannot do, and where it is headed in the future. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema CameraOf the myriad cinema-style cameras that have hit the market over the past year, none are as inexpensive or have as tiny of a form-factor as the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Add to that the camera’s 13 stops of dynamic range and internal ProRes/CinemaDNG recording, and it seems like one hell of a bargain at $995. As most of you know, Blackmagic has a distinct history of reducing prices on their cinema cameras, and they’ve done it once again — at least for the time being — with the BMPCC. ProRes 4444 LogoApple just recently updated Final Cut Pro X, with better options for managing optimized, proxy, and rendered media, so that they can be stored anywhere outside of the library, and also all be deleted from inside Final Cut Pro X. In addition to the changes in FCPX 10.1.2, Apple updated Compressor and Motion, and they also launched a brand new codec, ProRes 4444 XQ, which promises even higher fidelity than ProRes 4444 at the cost of additional disk space. Sony F5 F55 ProRes DNxHDToday, Sony announced that their higher end cinema cameras, the F5 and F55, are both going to be getting Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD recording in a future hardware upgrade. This is a big move for the company, which has so far avoided either of the codecs in both their high-end and low-end cameras, even as competitors like ARRI adopted them for much easier workflows. BMPCC ProRes vs RAWJust last night, Blackmagic Design released a firmware update for their Pocket Cinema Camera that we’ve all been waiting for since the day the camera was released several months ago, a firmware update that gave the minuscule camera the ability to shoot compressed RAW CinemaDNG files directly to the internal SD cards. The Convergent Design Gemini 4:4:4 might be the cheapest RAW recorder on the market, but it just got some company as far as 4:4:4 recording is concerned. Sound Devices, better known for their superb audio recording equipment, has just announced that they are offering a free upgrade to their PIX series of external monitor/recorders that is capable of giving access to the full power of the 3G-SDI, thereby allowing you to record in the 12-bit ProRes 4:4:4:4 codec at up to 30fps. It looks like it’s RED Day here at NoFilmSchool. Both Sony and RED have been making a lot of noise in relation to new products (or price reductions). We’ve got the new F5 and F55 cameras, and a new 4K recorder from Sony, and while we can’t be sure of the final price just yet, it’s clear RED and Sony both view compressed formats as important (even if one might say 1080p/2K is a “scam”). The new RED Meizler Module, which features all sorts of wireless controls and proxy recording, now officially supports ProRes. Another major milestone for RED, they’ve also released the cheapest media available, a 48GB SSD, and it’s in stock in the RED store if you’d like to order it. Click through for more details. More »
