Today saw the iTunes-exclusive album release of Watch the Throne, a collaboration between rap megastars Kanye West and Jay-Z. What does this have to do with independent filmmaking? Good question. Regardless of what kind of music you listen to, I think there are some lessons to be learned from the career arc of Kanye West, as well as the digital-first distribution strategy the duo employed for today’s album release. You know, while writing yesterday’s post about editing machines and Macs and PCs, I couldn’t help but feel that things are getting a bit computer-y around here. I’m especially sensitive about this thanks to my half-Asian heritage; we all know the stereotype. So here’s a (intentionally or unintentionally) hilarious 2007 song by rapper Kia Shine stressing the importance of having “tech game.” More »
