So how did Red Giant choose to showcase their offload, prep, and delivery solution BulletProof through the medium of film? Why, by creating Spy vs Guy, a live action Road Runner vs Wile E. Coyotesque film, steeped in cold war era skullduggery of course. This, you’d think, would generally refer to things like time-lapse or slow-motion — but what if some scientific breakthrough could invoke slow-motion upon real life objects, like some kind of time-warp weapon? Post-plugin powerhouse Red Giant has just released an original sci-fi/action short called Tempo that explores this possibility, and then some. It’s exciting whenever a hard-concept type of film sets its premise, proceeds to meet each and every hopeful expectation you might have given that premise, and then goes even further than you could hope for. This is the case with Tempo — check it out below. (Also, a Secret Sale soon-to-be… Shh, secret!) (more…)

With the newest software update, 3.1, it looks like they are committed to making it as easy to use as possible, and bringing it to as many computers as possible. To ensure a proper sync with any second-system audio however, you need great source audio on an external recorder and from the camera. Luckily for us DSLR shooters there are plenty of options for on-camera mics out there. And if you’re not a fan of all that second-system syncing in post, you’re in luck — now through December 31st, RØDE is packaging PluralEyes 3 — a $200 value — with the purchase of their Stereo VideoMic Pro or their VideoMic Pro. Even though newer NLEs like Final Cut Pro X (and not Premiere Pro, unfortunately) have the ability to sync audio, a third-party application like PluralEyes should be able to do it faster and more efficiently, and that’s certainly the claim made by Red Giant about the new PluralEyes version 3. This is the first version of PluralEyes since Red Giant acquired the software, so it will be interesting to see what direction it takes from here. FCPX’s current architecture doesn’t support some of the more complicated functionality included in Looks or Colorista, so X editors will have to make do with the simpler interface of Mojo for the time being. As a bonus, however, Red Giant has cut the price in half for this week only, bringing it down to $49 — and the coupon code works on all platforms, not just FCPX. Here’s the program in action: (more…)

To be clear, it is not an advanced color correction tool for professional colorists (check out Colorista or the Magic Bullet Suite if that’s what you’re looking for). However, just because you can does not mean you should. After editing a couple of projects in Premiere without transcoding, I’ve since started using Magic Bullet Grinder to convert to ProRes anyway, because shuttling and scrubbing in the timeline is much more responsive on transcoded footage. I’ve found that Red Giant Software’s multi-core, dead-simple processing tool ends up saving a lot of time in the editing session. So whether you’re editing in FCP and need to transcode, or just want to speed up your editing, here’s a 30% off coupon for Grinder — a NoFilmSchool exclusive! (more…)

Magic Bullet Colorista is one of the more indispensable post-production plugins in my toolbox, as it is a very high-quality primary color corrector. I like Colorista because it’s powerful, it’s easy to use, and it’s cross-platform, which means you can use the same plugin on Macs and PCs, and within Final Cut, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. However, to date Colorista hasn’t offered secondary color correction, which allows for more precise adjustments; with the release of Colorista II, Red Giant has added this missing feature — and many more.
