When it was announced (for real this time) back in November, it seemed like it would be shipping in just a matter of months, but like with anything RED — as they themselves admit — sometimes things can take a few detours along the way before finally getting into the hands of buyers. RED Educational DiscountIf you’re a student, faculty member, or institution, it has never been a better time to get in on a RED camera system. While there are endless arguments about cameras, if you happen to be looking at RED in particular, the company has begun offering an educational discount on most of their products. If you just finished a movie, ODEMAX, the company working with RED to bring 4K films to the masses, wants to take a look at your film. Hot of the presses, RED has just announced — as they said they would — their REDRAY 4K playback system, a 6-pound, DVD Player-sized playback device for $1,450. It has built-in 3D capabilities, offers 802.11N wireless connectivity/playback, is DCI-compliant, and debuts with it new security and file formats to make 4K distribution a reality — along with a brand new delivery network to debut at Sundance in January. RED seems to be on a roll lately. First it’s massive price drops, which include a $4,000 RED ONE MX body — you know — a camera that has shot many high-end feature films, and it costs only a little more than DSLR after the price drop. Now it’s looking like their REDRAY player, which plays highly compressed 4K material at lower-than-Blu Ray bitrates (but with almost indistinguishable quality), will begin shipping soon. The biggest news, however, is that RED is partnering with another company to introduce a 4K content distribution network built right into REDRAY. Loom, a science fiction short film directed by Luke Scott (son of Ridley and nephew of Tony), was used by RED to show off their 4K 3D projector at NAB 2012. The last time we talked about Luke Scott, he had just directed a viral video for his father Ridley’s Prometheus. While you won’t be able to watch it in 4K (or in 3D), the H.264 file is remarkably clean. The film is set in the mid-21st century and stars Giovanni Ribisi as a scientist working at a laboratory attempting to grow meat for human consumption. While he plays worker bee during the day, he’s got a secret that could land him in jail. More »

Earlier in the week I was able to watch the short film Loom, directed by Luke Scott and produced by his father, Ridley Scott. The entire futuristic sci-fi film was shot on Epic in 3D, and it was being projected on RED’s (not new) Laser Projector and RED Ray. Both of those products were announced a long time ago but RED may finally release them this year. Unfortunately at the beginning of the week the projector was only displaying 2K 3D in each eye, but it’s actually capable of 4K in each eye. I went back later in the week to see if it had been fixed but they were still working on the system, so I imagine at some point it will be 100% working as it ships late this year (hopefully). But the real question is: can 3D make a comeback with RED’s projector? Will the lower cost be beneficial to the survival of independent theaters or will this projector not be adopted by theaters at all? More »

This being my first time at NAB, it’s a little overwhelming with the incredible amount of exhibitors on hand. It should also be noted there are not a team of shooters and editors on hand to help me out – just me shooting and uploading everything you see (if you’re wondering why some videos might take so long to be uploaded). Some of the biggest news of the first day was the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera, which I had a few moments to play with and take a look at, and I also had a great interview with Simon Westland of Blackmagic. Some other big news was the announcement of the AJA Ki Pro Quad 4K recorder, and SmallHD’s new DP7 display, which has two versions – one with a very bright LCD and the other with an OLED – which reproduces colors impeccably. I’ll have more to come on RED’s NAB announcements (or strange lack thereof) in the coming days, but after a few visits to their booth, I thought the product that was being underreported was the RED RAY 4K playback system(s). The RED RAY Pro — announced long ago — was running flawlessly in a corner, and the RED RAY consumer version was on display as a mock-up. After spending some time with RED engineer Stuart English, the devices looked a lot more disruptive — especially for independent theatrical distribution. More »
