You can learn a tremendous amount by simply watching great films — paying attention to the details, breaking down a scene, concentrating on how elements come together. But if you really want to start making movies, learning a specific cinematic craft, it’s not enough. You have to get hands on.  It was with this in mind that I found myself increasingly intrigued with the idea of taking a compelling shot from a movie and seeing what could be learned by attempting to recreate the lighting as a cinematography exercise. As many of you have might have heard already, Tony Scott, British director and brother of Ridley Scott, passed away yesterday. His mark on cinema is unquestionable, and he was one of the hardest working people I’ve ever had the pleasure of being around. I worked for him and his company back in the fall of 2010, and even though I never had a conversation with him, I spent more hours doing work directly for him than anyone else. Previsualization and storyboarding will vary production to production, but it’s important to have some sort of idea about what you’re shooting before you shoot it. Often there are stories about famous directors coming on set and making it up as they go along, but this isn’t the most ideal way to work, especially when your budget can’t afford 50 crew members to move set pieces and lights to compensate for your on-the-fly planning. Though this may be the least amount of direct filmmaking knowledge you may get from this site, I thought it was worth following up with the previous Prometheus TEDTalk. We’ve got three new videos: an official full-length trailer, a Q&A with Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof, and a new viral ad. The Q&A does have some particularly insightful moments that go beyond just the film, but part of the reason I’m sharing this is that on a base level, I really feel that Ridley and his team are now bringing science fiction to even greater heights. They also shot in 3D on the RED Epic…so throw that in there for good measure. More »

If you haven’t heard of TEDTalks, we’ve covered quite a few of them here before, but now they’ve got a very special talk from a man named Peter Weyland, who happens to be the CEO of Weyland Industries. This a fictional character, of course, played by Guy Pearce, and it’s part of the marketing campaign for Ridley Scott’s “Alien prequel” Prometheus. YouTube’s crowdsourced, Ridley Scott-produced, Kevin Macdonald-directed Life in a Day was an excellent, globe-spanning, and touching film (watch it free in its entirety here). YouTube and Scott are not done, however: they’ve just announced a new contest calling for story-driven shorts, and the winner gets a $500k grant to make new work. More »

We last heard about YouTube’s Life in a Day project — wherein producer Ridley Scott and director Kevin MacDonald combed through 80,000 video submissions (totaling 4,500 hours) to piece together one day in the life of, well, humanity — in August. Now comes word that the filmmakers have chosen 26 co-directors from the submissions, and will be premiering the film live at Sundance, complete with a concurrent live stream on YouTube. YouTube’s bandwidth bill has been estimated at $300 million/year (or not) (or yes), but whatever the true amount of the bill, it can’t be cheap delivering 2 billion videos every day. One of the chief problems YouTube is faced with is how to monetize this content; most of its videos are user-generated, and it’s difficult to monetize UGC given most advertisers don’t want to run ads against amateur videos whose content can’t be controlled or cataloged. This could be a good reason for YouTube’s recent attempts to “mature” into a site where Guggenheim-worthy content is featured and Sundance films are shown as paid rentals.
