We’ve got our first images of Canon’s new ultra-small DSLR that was leaked by Best Buy, which will likely be announced soon. The new Canon EOS-b/T5i/700D/X7i (name not 100% confirmed yet) will be the smallest DSLR the company has ever made, and likely put more space between the low-end Rebel line and the semi-pro 60D. Best Buy Leaks New Ultra-Small Canon APS-C DSLR, Could Be Announced Soon

We had what looked like excellent information about a possible 60D replacement, and while that may still be happening, a new DSLR has appeared that seems to be aimed right at those who aren’t quite ready for a mirrorless camera, but still want something small and portable. This new camera, possibly called the EOS-b (some are referring to it as the 100D), was leaked last night by Best Buy, and we have some details for you below. (more…)

Canon 60D to Be Replaced in Two Weeks with Semi-Pro 70D?

There have been many reports over the last few months of dwindling Canon 60D stock — which can often indicate that a replacement is on the horizon. A number of rumors have surfaced recently regarding the possible replacement, the 70D, and where that camera will stand in terms of Canon’s lineup. We’ve spoken about Canon’s future product line, and how a 7D Mark II might fit in, and while there is no question the new 70D will have an APS-C sensor, the only other detail we definitely know is that Canon will have a product announcement near the end of March, based on the invite that just went out. Sony All but Promises More Full Frame Video Beyond 2012: Mirrorless, or Otherwise

2012 marked a monumental year for Sony. Not one, not two, but three full frame video or video-capable cameras were announced, and on the same day, no less. One of these constitutes the only full frame camcorder to date, the NEX-VG900, so the historicity really can’t be discounted. Doubtlessly responding to consumer and industry feedback, and before the models the company has announced have even been released yet, Sony isn’t content to let the waves they’ve made in our cozy little pond merely ripple back. Instead, they’ve all but confirmed yet another stills/video camera in production, targeting even more pieces of the market share they’ve aggressively sought to carve out. In this case, Sony’s bringing all the more good news for full frame enthusiasts — especially those looking past the A99 — and those DSLR users with positive mirrorless shooting experiences. (more…)

Is Canon's 4K DSLR, the 1D C, the Perfect Hybrid Photo/Video Camera?

A lot of the talk around the 1D C has been the somewhat high price for a camera that has only a slight advantage in specs compared to the 1D X, which is far cheaper. Price aside, it’s important to talk about this camera in a way that might make more sense than as a 4K motion picture camera. The 1D C may very well be the the most affordable and the easiest to use hybrid stills/video camera in existence. We’re not talking about a camera that shoots great stills and HD video, like most hybrids, but a camera that shoots great stills and 4K video which photographers can use to pull still images from. Canon's 1D C: Under the Hood, is It Really the 1D X's Twin?

There’s been some speculation recently that the yet-to-be released Canon EOS-1D C is internally identical to the $6800 Canon 1D X, and that the 1D C’s 4K resolution ability is simply a matter of superior firmware. Note the $7000 more you’d pay for the 1D C, and it becomes easy to see why this notion could be upsetting to some Canon shooters. Of course, given the limited experience the camera community has with the 1D C, speculation is about the best we can do at the moment. Panasonic Accidentally Unveils the GH3 in Promotional Video

Even though it’s not set to be officially unveiled until Monday, a promotional video for the Panasonic GH3 (the GH2 replacement) was accidentally released ahead of the announcement. The first video was actually released by Panasonic themselves, and has since been removed, but thanks to fast users, it has been uploaded elsewhere. Check out the video and updated specs below for all of the details on the new GH3.

Panasonic GH3 Camera Rumors: Higher Bit Rate Codec, Wider Dynamic Range, and More

The forthcoming Panasonic GH3 has some big shoes to fill, especially given the popularity (in hacked form) of its predecessor, the GH2. That camera came out on top in a poll we conducted as the favorite scene of NoFilmSchool readers in the 2012 Zacuto Shootout — with the far more expensive Arri Alexa and Sony F65 digital cameras rounding out second and third. While that poll involved a test with subjective lighting, it’s clear that the hacked GH2 can hold its own, especially for a camera priced under $1,000. Rumors have been flying recently about the specs of the GH3, and if they turn out to be true, there will be significant improvements in the camera’s codec, dynamic range, and auto focus, as well as the addition of some potentially interesting new features. Rumors Have the Nikon D800 Featuring Full 1080p Video and 36 Megapixel Stills

Take this rumor the way most rumors should be taken (with a grain, or many grains, of salt), but the Nikon D700′s successor/big brother, the D800, is rumored to debut in Japan this Thursday, November 24th for roughly $3,900. The camera will reportedly have 1080p at 30, 25, and 24p, moves up to 60p at 720p, and is supposed to shoot stills at 36 megapixels (!). Canon Prepares to Enter Pro Camcorder Market with New Technology Center in Hollywood

Perhaps confirming the rumors that they will release their first camcorder designed for Hollywood/professional/whatever-you-want-to-call-it feature filmmaking on November 3rd, Canon today announced the opening of their “Canon Hollywood Professional Technology and Support Center” at 6060 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Canon to Announce 19K 4D $99 Camcorder (or Something Else) in Hollywood on November 3

Today Canon pre-announced an announcement — which they’re calling “historic” — to take place in Hollywood on November 3rd. What would be hilarious is if they show up in Tinseltown and announce a new line of inkjet printers. But because it’s Hollywood, hopefully it will have something to do with, you know, movies. In the “proper video camera with large sensor” market, Sony has their FS100 and F3, and Panasonic has their AF100. As of right now, Canon has nothing. Just saying! Here’s their teaser: (more…)

Rumors Have Sony Joining the HDSLR Game for Real with A77, NEX7 and VG20

The internets seem to believe this rumor’s real, so here we go: reports are that Sony will make an official announcement on August 24th about their next lineup of DSLRs and large-chip camcorders, which will come with a laundry list of much-requested features. With a lack of significant new HDSLR features from Canon and Nikon in quite some time, Sony’s new features are even more welcome: namely, full 1080p at 60/50/25/24p with full manual controls.
