CropperCapture[90]We’ve all heard it. “If only (fill in the blank) camera had a full frame sensor, I’d be able to use it.” Or, “The image from the GH4 sure is great, but I just couldn’t get used to a Micro 4/3 sensor.” If you’ve spent any time reading editorial comments about digital cameras in the past 5 years, then you’re almost certainly familiar with these types of statements. While different sized sensors can provide substantial differences in both aesthetic qualities and low-light performance, the argument that’s most often thrown around in these discussions is about “crop factor,” or the relative field of view from one sensor size to the next. Personally, I think it’s about time we put the issue of sensor size into perspective so that we can stop making goofy, arbitrary statements like these. s16 F55In late 2013, Sony released version 3.0 of the firmware for their F5 and F55 cameras. This update added a veritable plethora of new features for these two cameras, including internal 4K and more options in regards to high frame rate shooting. However, one of the most interesting features of the update was the addition of what Sony calls “Center Scan Mode” which essentially crops the sensor in order to allow native use of lenses with a smaller image circle than s35, chiefly older s16 lenses. Despite a somewhat premature release of the cameras with some of the key functionalities missing (especially in terms of higher resolutions and frame rates), the cameras are finally up to their original specs and then some. IkonoskopThis past summer, Swedish camera manufacturer Ikonoskop announced that it would be temporarily halting production of its super16 RAW digital cinema camera, the A-Cam DII. Despite the fact that filmmakers around the world praised the A-Cam DII for its simplistic functionality and stellar image quality, the company stopped production due to a “strained financial situation” that was likely caused by high manufacturing costs and stagnant sales. However, Ikonoskop announced yesterday that the company is under new ownership and that they’re in the process of renewing their ecosystem. What could this mean for fans of the A-Cam DII? If you switched your pre-order to the Micro 4/3 version, there might be some light at the end of the tunnel for shipping on that model, especially as it has been some time since the Beta testers got a hold of that model. Footage has been nonexistent for the 4K camera (even though we’re closing in on the release date), but the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has gotten one bit of test clips so far, with another now being released. Blackmagic announced two cameras at NAB 2013, but on the floor at the show, much of the buzz was not about the 4K camera, but actually the smaller Pocket Camera. Truly a first of its kind, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera with its Super 16mm-sized sensor will be recording ProRes and RAW 1080p footage in a package about the size of most mirrorless cameras, all for $1,000. I got to play around with both cameras a bit, but it’s always nicer to see a camera outside of the NAB show floor and really get a sense of what it’s capable of. Blackmagic might have introduced new cameras at NAB, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t still working on support for the current 2.5K camera (which is still trickling out slowly but surely). Contrary to what most people think, research and development doesn’t necessarily interfere with anything they are doing to support the current camera, as it is normally different teams of people working on different things. The company has just released firmware update 1.3, which should be great for those who’ve wanted to bring the Blackmagic Cinema Camera into a broadcast environment. We’ve all been speculating that this year’s NAB show would be a major one in terms of new cinema-style cameras at incredibly low price points. After Blackmagic Design shook up the cinema camera world last year, the market seemed destined for another company to swoop in an steal the BMCC’s thunder. However, a photo of two brand-spankin’ new Blackmagic Cinema Cameras has been leaked, and it’s definitely real. It appears that Blackmagic has done it again, and their thunder is locked down in a vault that would leave even Danny Ocean and his team of 13 stumped.
