You might have already purchased a Wii U or Xbox 360 for someone in your family (or Playstation 3 if you’re still rocking those), but there are plenty of extremely useful gifts for filmmakers that won’t cost you an arm or a leg, and they’ll probably be put to more use than a video game (though I guess that depends on the specific filmmaker). Read through to check them out. (more…)

This happens to be true in the case of SmallHD’s new OLED HDMI and SDI monitors — and Organic Light Emitting Diodes are actually news to me in general. What’s even more exciting is that SmallHD is looking to provide very high-quality monitoring solutions for prices previously unheard-of. Read on for a more comprehensive specs readout and a bit on what makes OLEDs different from traditional LCD systems. (more…)

They are introducing a beautiful 1280 x 800 7″ screen that takes advantage of OLED technology to produce the richest colors you’ve ever seen on a monitor. They’ve got two versions that cost exactly the same, $2,700, but the other monitor uses a super-bright LCD to make viewing in daytime much simpler. I had a talk with Dale Backus from SmallHD, and he introduced both monitors and the Port Protector in the video below. (more…)

It should also be noted there are not a team of shooters and editors on hand to help me out – just me shooting and uploading everything you see (if you’re wondering why some videos might take so long to be uploaded). Some of the biggest news of the first day was the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera, which I had a few moments to play with and take a look at, and I also had a great interview with Simon Westland of Blackmagic. Some other big news was the announcement of the AJA Ki Pro Quad 4K recorder, and SmallHD’s new DP7 display, which has two versions – one with a very bright LCD and the other with an OLED – which reproduces colors impeccably. (more…)

Beyond the problem this presents for accurately pulling focus (because of the reduced resolution), this change in resolution is seemingly handled by every field monitor in a different way. Some scale the output accurately, others squash the image, and there is always a variable delay in between the time you hit the record button and the time the monitor refreshes with the new resolution. Monitor manufacture SmallHD is here to lay out the facts of DSLR field monitoring with their excellent video “Effective Pixels 101″: (more…)

Jason Wingrove has a great walkthrough of the just-launched SmallHD DP6 (formerly the DP-SLR) field monitor, which I’ve had my eye on for a while. It’s a 5.6″, 1280×800 monitor perfectly sized for DSLR use, and the high resolution of the unit makes it viable for use on higher-end cameras like the RED.
