Sony NEX-VG900: a Real Video Camera, or a Full-Frame DSLR in Disguise?

Many had very high hopes that the first full-frame video camera from Sony, or anyone for that matter, the NEX-VG900, might be a huge step up from DSLRs, not only in form factor, but in image quality. While there may not be enough footage out there (it’s certainly not as popular as DSLRs or something like the BMCC), reviews are starting to come in for the camera. Sony All but Promises More Full Frame Video Beyond 2012: Mirrorless, or Otherwise

2012 marked a monumental year for Sony. Not one, not two, but three full frame video or video-capable cameras were announced, and on the same day, no less. One of these constitutes the only full frame camcorder to date, the NEX-VG900, so the historicity really can’t be discounted. Doubtlessly responding to consumer and industry feedback, and before the models the company has announced have even been released yet, Sony isn’t content to let the waves they’ve made in our cozy little pond merely ripple back. Instead, they’ve all but confirmed yet another stills/video camera in production, targeting even more pieces of the market share they’ve aggressively sought to carve out. In this case, Sony’s bringing all the more good news for full frame enthusiasts — especially those looking past the A99 — and those DSLR users with positive mirrorless shooting experiences. (more…)

Is the Sony A99 the Best Full-Frame Camera for Video?

Announced along with a hundred other cameras from Sony (including a full-frame mirrorless camera), the new A99 SLT full-frame camera is an attempt to take the reigns in the small camera race in both still photography and video. The specs are certainly there, with a 24 megapixel sensor and uncompressed HDMI, but as we know, specs don’t always tell the whole story. Johnnie Behiri, a BBC freelance cameraman/editor (among other things), got a chance to test out the camera and has given us some test videos along with his impressions. (more…)

Sony Unveils World's First Full-Frame Video Camera

Today is quite the announcement day for Sony. As I hinted at in the previous A99 post, there were more cameras to come. One of the other major announcements today is a first of its kind: a full frame video camera. That camera, the NEX-VG900, joins the replacement to the VG20, the new NEX-VG30. While both of these are consumer options, they feature the same very adaptable E-mount as well as uncompressed HDMI — with the VG900 actually including an adapter for A-mount lenses to be able to be electronically controlled by the camera. Sony Announces Full-Frame A99 with 1080P 60FPS and Uncompressed HDMI

Sony today unveiled the A99, a camera we discussed back in August that had been rumored for months. From the spec sheet, it seems Sony is listening to video users and trying to pick up the pieces from Canon’s somewhat less-than-stellar Mark III offering. While that camera’s still image quality is well above average, its video features were a bit lacking. Sony, on the other hand, took every criticism anyone had for that Canon DSLR and put them all into one body: uncompressed HDMI, 1080p 60fps, and a swivel LCD. Sony, at least for the moment, can claim the top spot as the cheapest full-frame camera with all of these video features. Check out the videos below for some sample footage from the camera. (more…)

Will the Sony A99 Be the Full-Frame DSLR Video Shooters Have Been Waiting For?

It’s now being reported that Sony will be announcing a new full-frame DSLR (they call it an SLT since the mirror is translucent) on September 12th called the A99. The last big announcement from Sony, the A77, introduced a lot of new features but didn’t quite take hold in the world of independent filmmakers. Rumored specs seem to indicate Sony is pulling out all of the stops on this one, but the real question is, will this be the best full-frame DSLR for video? (more…)
