While adoption hasn’t been nearly as high for Thunderbolt as it has been for USB 3.0, that hasn’t stopped Intel from pushing development forward to much faster data rates. Originally a 10Gbps format, the new Thunderbolt 2 doubles the bandwidth to 20Gbps, or 2.5 Gigabytes per second. This will also mean good things for those trying to work with 4K video, as the newer format is made to support the viewing of 4K material. (more…)

Given all this, Mac users find themselves in a bizarre transitional phase. It may be frustrating, because while Apple surges forward, peripherals’ acceptance of Thunderbolt has been lackluster at best. Much to the relief of perennial Mac users finding themselves unable to blend their legacy gear with, say, their fresh iMac or MacBook Pro, Matrox has finally released it’s DS1 Thunderbolt docking station — the first solution of its kind — which looks to seamlessly marry almost everything you could want between the old and the new. (more…)

Marking the first time Thunderbolt ports are available on a desktop computer, the new 10Gbps standard is up to 12 times faster than Firewire 800, making for faster video transfers from compatible devices. The new iMacs start at $1199 and claim to be up to 70% faster than the previous generation. (more…)

Without going into specifics, however, the new FCP is being called “the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago,” and more simply, “jaw-dropping.” More on the new FCP in a second. Apple also released new MacBook Pros this week, which, along with the usual slew of processor and graphics updates, debuted a brand new 10Gbps (read: ridiculously fast) interface — Thunderbolt. Apple Pro is back. (more…)
