WriterDuetBack in September, we shared with you a post about WriterDuet, a free, online screenwriting app that lets screenwriters collaborate on the same script in real-time. Other screenwriting applications tout collaboration tools, but with WriterDuet, you can actually collaborate on a script online with as many people as you want at the same time. And it's free. But sometimes, we want to write our screenplays alone, offline. Now, WriterDuet is creating an offline desktop version that auto-syncs when you're online, and they want to collaborate with you.

Here's a quick video to show you how the free, online version of WriterDuet currently works and how you can help create a desktop version:

The request WriterDuet has received most often since its launch is to create an offline, desktop version that saves files to a user's hard drive and auto-syncs with the online version when an Internet connection is available.

Guy Goldstein, the creator of WriterDuet, is working on that project right now and he is asking screenwriters to tell him which features they would like to see included in the desktop version. In fact, Guy is actively seeking nominations via email for additional features that screenwriters want to see in the desktop version of WriterDuet.

The desktop app will be designed to work on Mac and Windows computers. Guy admits that some of the online features of WriterDuet won't be available in the desktop app. For example, spell/grammar check relies on the online servers, and the dictation tool is a browser-specific capability, so neither of these will be in the offline desktop app. Also, you won't be able to send updates to other writers -- because you're offline.

If you would like to see a desktop version of WriterDuet become a reality, you can support Guy's recently launched Kickstarter campaign. Based on the level of support, Kickstarter backers can beta test the desktop version, vote on the nominated additional features, access their cached scripts when they are offline, and get licenses to the complete WriterDuet desktop app upon completion.
