No longer will you need to have this conversation when working with RED and viewing in RAW mode. Being able to view a log output on your monitor is helpful to see what's really there in your exposure, but the consequence has been that those who don't understand log tend to think something is wrong with the image, or worse, they actually start to like the ungraded log and want it as the final product. In RED's new 5.3.9 Beta firmware, this will no longer be an issue:

RED's also got a new exposure tool that works just like the zone system, but instead of using a light meter and working out your f-stops in your head or on a piece of paper, you'll be able to see each stop of latitude expressed as a color on-screen. This new mode, called the Gio Scope Tool, was developed with the help of actor Giovanni Ribisi, who has been working with RED cameras for some time:

  • Camera freeze with 4K Broadcast and +1 Adaptor
  • Dragon intermittent startup errors
  • Invalid Dragon formats in spinner after loading custom Epic preset file
  • Text in Media Info dialog
  • Anamorphic selection in Format dialog for Scarlet Dragon
  • OLPF description for Dragon Monochrome
  • UI when last user cal map is deleted

  • Stale battery info when battery is switched on Quickplate module

In addition an Alpha driver 2.1.16.0 and firmware 1.3.17.0 for RED ROCKET-X was released which adds:

  • Up to 20% speed improvement
  • Added support for Mysterium-X & Dragon Monochrome
  • Stability improvements

And a Alpha 31.1 for REDCINE-X PRO :

  • Added: Rocket-X Monochrome support.
  • Added: Support for AJA Io 4K and Kona 4 (Note: removes support for Kona 3).
  • Note: Rocket-X support requires driver 2.1.16.0 and firmware 1.3.17.0
  • Fixed: Issue with OpenEXR upscaled exports when using CUDA.
  • Fixed: Issue with QuickTime mono audio layout exports.
  • Fixed: Issue with Avid external audio exports.

The Alpha builds aren't that stable yet, but if you desperately need a feature that has been released, it's there for you to try. The Beta firmware for the cameras should still be pretty stable, though the release build will be the most stable.
