Here's a first look at their new FlexTilt Head, which seems like it might be an interesting option to expand the usability of sliders or other flat-based tripods without adding much weight:

While it's not super cheap, it seems like it could be one of those tools you have in your bag that take out when you need it. I could see this being really useful for sliders when you want to keep your rig super light. If you need just a little bit more height (and then a tilt) or you need to get closer to the object without moving the slider, the FlexTilt seems like it would do the job. For even greater flexibility, you could also probably put a little ball head on top, and then put the camera on that.
My only worry is how long it would stay as sturdy as you need it. A Noga arm sort of tie-down would be helpful for something like this, but then it wouldn't be as compact. I also wish it had 3/8" and 1/4"-20 on both the top and the bottom, especially as you start putting heavier cameras up to 5.5 pounds. Either way, it's an interesting concept and one that could certainly be expanded upon.
