For most situations a simple boom pole or C-stand will do just fine, but sometimes you need to get a little inventive with the way you mount your mics. Thankfully Caleb Pike of DSLR Video Shooter offers 5 creative ways to mount a microphone in the video below:

Here's the list of gear he mentions in the video:

  • Cheap Clamps
  • Cheap Monitor Arm
  • Heavy Duty Monitor Arm
  • Zoom Handle
  • Music Mic Stand
  • Boom Holder
  • Nano Clamp
  • 1/4″ to 3/8″ thread adapter

Again, boom poles or C-stands are usually going to work perfectly for most shooting situations you're going to find yourself in, but the mounting options Pike talks about really come in handy if you're 1.) pressed for time and need to make modifications to your mic placement quickly, 2.) working with a skeleton crew and don't have a boom operator, or 3.) working with limited space, like in a car or bathroom, and can't fit a giant boom pole or C-stand setup. Articulating monitor arms are especially helpful, because you can make fine adjustments to your microphone without having to mess with the cumbersome mic/C-stand elements.
