KipperTie is a new company that started as a production and rental resource but is now expanding into the glass game. These diffusion filters are placed behind the lens rather than the front, sot he diffusion effect becomes independent of the focal length you’re shooting with. They've developed three different specialty filters, the Carbon, Pearl, and Gold, specifically for RED cameras. The specialty filters cost around $695, but they also off full spectrum false color filters for about $500.
By incorporating the filter directly inside the OLPF a number of issues with front-of-lens filtration are removed:
- No need to take up a stage in your matte box (or even to use one at all)
- No internal reflections from additional optical surfaces
- No more swapping diffusion filters every time you change focal length; the effect is focal length independent
- Filter any size or shape of lens, no matter how huge, bulbous or difficult to handle.
- Greatly reduced ‘sparkling’ and bokeh patterning, with micro-fine diffusion particles.
