There are two main issues when it comes to sliders (barring just poor performance): size and price tag, and it doesn't do a filmmaker any good if either is too big. But Italian video equipment manufacturer SmartSystem has come out with a highly portable slider called SmartSLIDER Atom that is not only compact enough to use just about anywhere, but it's also easy on the wallet. Check out this video to learn more about it:

The SmartSLIDER Atom is a small and portable slider that weighs in at just 1.42 pounds. It's fully customizable, and SmartSystem offers bundles of parts that customers can choose to include based on their personal need or the needs of their project.

The five main components of the SmartSLIDER Atom is the core, wheels, bars, T-Fix, and the feet. The core is an aircraft aluminum carriage with a design that allows users to calibrate the slider by adjusting a side screw. The wheels are made of plastic material with "one by one selected ball-bearings". The bars (Bar 35, 60, and 70) are hollow and made of aluminum to cut down on weight, and are available in lengths between 13.77" to 29.5". The tripod adapter, T-Fix, comes with 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 threaded holes. The feet are made of high resistance plastic with rubber dampener on the bottom and come with a quick release for easy removal.

Prices range based on which bundle you choose. Currently there is only one bundle available, the Atom 35, but Atom 60 and 75 are scheduled to be released in February of 2017. Here's a pricing breakdown for each:

  • Atom 35: $270
  • Atom 60: $320
  • Atom 70: $330

There are plenty of lightweight, rugged, budget-friendly sliders out there, but it never hurts to have another option available. Indie, run-and-gun, travel, and documentary filmmakers might really want to take a closer look at this slider since most cinematic tracking movements don't require a super long track; for most moves all you really need is a foot or so and that's what the Atom gives you—for quite a deal.
