Even though GoPro action cams are rock-solid pieces of equipment that you can enjoy tossing off of buildings for years, it's always nice to get your hands on the latest and greatest iteration. GoPro has announced its first-ever camera trade-up program, which gives users either a $100 discount for the $400 HERO5 or a $50 discount for the $300 HERO5 Session if they send in their old HERO cams. GoPro even pays for shipping.

The best part: it doesn't matter if you send in your relatively new HERO4 or a gray-haired original. According to the press release, GoPro is taking any and all HERO action cameras.

We’ll take any old GoPro, regardless of condition. Water-logged? Mud-caked? Pulverized lens? Missing components? Yep – we just want to help you upgrade to HERO5.

And you can send as many as you like. GoPro says that for every old HERO you send in, they'll hook you up with a discount on the HERO5; we assume the more you send, the more of a discount you get. Even with just the base $100/$50 discount, that's a pretty tantalizing deal— especially if you're currently using a broken HERO2 as a paperweight.

The process is simple. All have to do is go to the Trade-Up Program site and choose which GoPro you want, either the HERO5 or HERO5 Session. From there, you pay for your GoPro at the discounted price, after which GoPro will send you a shipping label so you can send them your old HERO camera. Voila!

This trade-up program couldn't have come at a better time. GoPro's last six months have been the company's toughest yet: a class-action lawsuit, a complete recall of the Karma drone, underperforming sales, and a reduction of 15% of their workforce back in December. A move like this might help the action cam company draw in more customers for the HERO5—something it has gone to great lengths to do, even offering free units to those who bought faulty Karma drones
