The $49 Platypod Ultra is a Mini Tripod That You Can Mount Virtually Anywhere
This small but mighty accessory will let you mount and stabilize your mirrorless and smaller DSLR cameras pretty much anywhere.
There are a lot of great camera accessories out there, but one factor that seems to consistently arise is versatility. Everyone loves a tool that can do more than one thing, and the newest iteration of the Platypod can do just that. The Ultra is the latest in the Platypod line and improves greatly on its predecessors. You wouldn't know from looking at it, but the thin, smartphone-sized tool is both a mini tripod and a highly versatile mounting plate that you can put wherever you need it.
The Platypod Ultra has 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads for mounting to tripods, heads, and quick-release plates, two open belt slots for strapping around trees, poles, and railings, and three countersunk mounting holes if you want to permanently screw it into a wall. Really, the number of different mounting options for this thing depends on your own creativity and ingenuity. Check out how photographer Jason Hahn created a sling mount using the Ultra's open belt slots.
It is also a durable mini tripod that is ideal for shooting on or near the ground without having to sacrifice stability. It comes with four spiked feet that can be adjusted to fit uneven terrain.
It supports up to 90 lbs., is ideal for mirrorless cameras, action cams, and DSLRs, as well as small to medium-sized lenses, and is compatible with most professional tripod ball heads. The Platypod Ultra weighs about 3 oz., is about 5" x 3" (around the size of a smartphone), and is made of aircraft grade aluminum. It's small and light enough to carry around in your pocket, bag, or on a carabiner.
The Platypod Ultra upgrades may seem small and insignificant from far away, but as photographer David Coleman says, they "add up to an incredibly versatile tool for mounting your camera in places where other mounting options come up short."
The Platypod Ultra is currently on Kickstarter and has already far surpassed its $20K goal. The company is offering rewards that not only include the base unit, but accessories like adapters, silicone pads (for added stabilization), bolts, tension straps, and travel bags. Here's a pricing breakdown:
- Platypod Ultra: $49
- Platypod Ultra + Multi-Accessory Kit: $69
