These days, small cameras are capable of delivering amazing imagery—but with the major drawback that they still mostly have small screens, which can make framing and focus difficult. While there are a variety of great monitors out there with prices that are getting lower every day, the cheapest available option is now available: purchasing a LukiLink and using your smartphone as a monitor.

LukiLink users might be concerned about latency, but initial testers like Frank Glencairn are getting good results that show pretty minimal latency, considering the conversion. Some measure of latency, however, is inevitable; it will depend quite a bit on the processing power of your phone. Ultimately, you want it to be as short as possible so that you can make accurate focus inputs and respond adequately to changing scene dynamics.

LukiLink is also set up for both recording video and streaming, but the data rate limitations make this a less attractive option for most. It'll do in a pinch, but there are better solutions out there for recording (though of course none at this price point).

Currently, the launch appears to be Android-only, which is more likely due to limitations placed by Apple on iOs hardware and software than reluctance by the developers. If you are an Android user looking for a cost-effective monitoring solution, LukiLink's Kickstarter price is $93 with an eventual launch price of $150.
