Building on the previously released VEO body, the new Phantom VEO4K-PL is a cinema-targeted, compact, ultra-slow-motion camera that is designed with a form factor similar to the Red Epic and Alexa Mini. Compared to the current flagship Phantom Flex4K, it's a major size reduction, allowing for a variety of new camera mounting positions that would be inconvenient, if not impossible, with the full Flex body.

The camera is capable of 938fps when capturing all of the sensor's native 4096x2304 pixels, but can hit 1000fps when cropping that down to the more standard 4096x2160. Going down to 2048x1080 bumps the max speed all the way up to 1970fps.
The VEO4K-PL records to internal memory, and with the largest RAM size of 72GB, you can record up to five seconds at 1000fps 4096x2160, or 5000 frames, of footage. That five seconds stretches out to 3 minutes 28 seconds when played back at 24fps. As was discussed at the ShareGrid Phantom workshop earlier this year, Phantom is an entirely different workflow and mindset to get used to, and that limitation is one of the elements to get your brain around.

In addition to SDI and HDMI outputs that are designed for monitoring but can be real-time captured with a monitor recorder if desired, the VEO4K-PL also offers the option of CFast cards up to 512GB. The camera doesn't capture directly to the card, however. Instead, the camera captures to the internal memory then copies to the card, and the card must be CFast 2.0.

With an expected price point over $60,000, it's likely a rental-only option for most of us, but it's good to know that a smaller form factor, high frame rate machine is hitting the streets, especially for upcoming aerial or stabilized slow-mo work. Check out Phantom for more.
