Discover the Notable Filmmakers on the Time 100 List of 2018

Although there haven't been too many lists celebrating the filmmakers in 2018 who have had an awesome year—we're only four months in!—there is a pretty substantial one that celebrates what they have accomplished over the past 365 days.

Time Magazine has released its annual Time 100 list, a comprehensive guide to the men and women who have had an influence on the world over the past twelve months. Several filmmakers working outside of the studio system made the cut, and here are a few recognizable to No Film School readers.

An Oscar-nominee for co-writing The Big Sick with wife, Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani was selected for Time's Pioneer section, a section so expansive that it also includes Chloe Kim, Cardi B, and the Parkland, Florida advocates for gun control.

Fellow screenwriter/performer Issa Rae, having a career breakout for her HBO series, Insecure, was also included, with actress Mindy Kaling contributing a blurb praising the two-time Golden Globe nominee: "Only Issa Rae could make the adjectives awkward and insecure chic. That’s an impossible thing to do. But here we have her, Issa Rae: writer, actor, force of nature—and chic as hell."

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler (Artists section)—previously on the Time 100 list in 2016 when his second feature, Creed, was released—and his leading man Chadwick Boseman (Icons) were represented, both for being the main components of one of the most successful films of all-time and for the inarguable promise they hold for the future.

Joining Boseman in the Icons section were reporters Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey, and Ronan Farrow for helping to uncover rampant sexual abuse in Hollywood. The team were also awarded a Pulitzer Prize earlier this week for their work.

Guillermo Del Toro, a recent Academy Award winner for The Shape of Water (which took home four Oscars in total, including Best Picture) was also chosen for the Artists category, along with fellow Best Director nominee Greta Gerwig. Gerwig, celebrated for her incredible directorial debut, Lady Bird, also wrote the film's screenplay, which you can read here. Who was chosen to write her Time profile? None other than Steven Spielberg.

If you're wondering why the heck Jordan Peele, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter for Get Out, isn't on the list, it's due to the fact that he was celebrated for his directorial debut on last year's. For 2018 however, Peele wrote the profile for Del Toro's selection, noting "You can develop the ability to orchestrate mythology the way Guillermo does only by being an obsessively empathetic person. He is an auteur whom artists adore."

And making the list just in time is director/screenwriter/actor John Krasinski, who took to holding all three of those roles on A Quiet Place, his debut feature which has been cited as one of the scariest movies in years.
