During a live stream at Photokina, Panasonic rolled out a pair of full frame mirrorless cameras: a 47MP S1R and a 24MP S1 both featuring the Leica L-mount which Sigma, Panasonic, and Leica have partnered to develop future technology. It's Panasonic's first time developing mirrorless and full frame.
Let's look at the offerings.
Lumix S1R & S1 Shared Specs
Both feature a 35 mm full frame image sensor and a new Venus image processing engine, 4K 60p/50p video recording, dual I.S. image stabilization, dual card slot (one QXD, one SD), 3-axis tilt LCD, Panasonic's Depth-from-Defocus system for autofocus, and the aforementioned L-mount.
Additionally, the S series will feature 100% sealing on all dials, buttons, and seams, and resistance to temperatures as low as -40° F/C.
Lumix S1R & S1 Differences
At the moment, it's essentially effective pixels: 47MP for S1R and approximately 24MP for S1.
Lenses
Panasonic will offer three Lumix S series compatible lenses including a 50 mm F1.4, a 24-105 mm zoom, and 70-200 mm telephoto zoom lens. By 2020, ten lenses are expected to be introduced. Thanks to the aforementioned L-mount alliance, Leica will offer eight lenses at launch and Sigma is expected to release compatible options as well.
Pricing & Availability
Both the S1R and S1 will be launching in early 2019. Keep in mind that final specs may change. As more information comes in, we'll update this post. Finally, what also drew some interest was Panasonic's commit to 8K. It's something we will definitely be seeing from them in the future.
